It is funny on several levels? What levels? Is one of those levels Alabama idiot can’t spell simple words correctly?

He knows how to spell it. Several levels of trolling, probably.

Yesterday Ryan Fowler said he had a list of OL coaches that DeBoer was looking at per his sources and of those he was doing research on he thought each would be a good hire. Did not release names so I suppose it could just be radio material but I’ve always found him to shoot straight so that was somewhat encouraging. He did admit though that 2 yrs ago he thought the Wofford hire was a good hire and he was wrong.

ETA he also said he’s not just gonna try to hire a big name that whoever it was would fit what he likes to do and that was part of the problem with the OL consistency the last three years.

I'm guessing DeBoer knew Grubbs did not want to coach at Alabama, but I'm not sure if Huff leaving was expected. He doesn't seem prepared for that.

I'm way more concerned about losing an O line coach than I am an OC.

What are you seeing that makes you say this?

I don't anyone here has any great insight into how DeBoer operates, other than he seems to keep things pretty quiet. I'd think that whether it was a surprise or not, a head coach is prepared to hire other coaches at any given time as yearly job changing is pretty much standard operating procedure in the coaching profession.

The OL coaching hire has been quite but I think it's more than just DeBoer. Alabama according to the prognosticators is not even a top 10 team next year. Which I'm actually ok with. So the bright lights of Hollywood followed Saban out the door. We have to re-imagine what we want to be and that is better done in the shadows. I think Saban's 2008 team was not even in the top 20 when we met Clemson in Atlanta and cold cocked them on national TV to introduce the world to the new Tide under Saban. I look forward to the awakening. I don't know when that will be or what poor souls is going to be on the other side of a public beat down but be asured, it's coming.

Ryan Trevathan, any word on his role? I seen he had posted on his Twitter "Swarm D". I believe he was at Arkansas Tech as OC/WR coach. Maybe analysis? Hopefully nothing in the WR coaching category..

Why would an OC/WR coach be posting about defense? Curious.

Mason Miller, Mike Leach's OL coach at Mississippi State, is a person some people have mentioned as being someone to consider. He has extensive experience in Air Raid offenses (including some OC and HC), going as far back as Hal Mumme. When Mississippi State hired another HC after Mike Leach passed away, he went to Tarleton State as the OC there.

Yeah, he's changed his bio to say "Alabama football #TheGreatestEver #SwarmD" and tweeted:

Excited for new opportunities in Tuscaloosa!! #RollTide #SwarmD

Seems like he's worked with offenses his entire career, so curious that he keeps hashtagging "SwarmD"

Mason Miller
I would be 100% pleased if this ends up being the hire

quote:

At Mississippi State, Miller coached left tackle Charles Cross for two seasons before Cross was selected No. 9 overall by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2022 NFL Draft. Cross earned both first team All-America and first team All-SEC honors during his final season in Starkville. He was the SEC's top pass-blocker with an 84.9 grade from PFF and did not allow a sack on the year. After Cross was drafted ninth overall, Leach and Miller became one of three head coach and offensive line coach tandems with a first-round offensive lineman selected in two of the last four NFL Drafts. Another offensive lineman coached by Miller drafted by the Seahawks in 2022 was third-round selection Abe Lucas, who played under Miller at Washington State. Cross and Lucas were the Seahawks starters at the tackle positions during the 2022 season.

Over Miller's second and third seasons with the Bulldogs, his unit ranked No. 2 in the SEC and No. 15 in the FBS in offensive line efficiency, according to Coaches by the Numbers. MSU led the SEC and ranked No. 3 in the FBS in lowest percentage of tackles for loss allowed during that span.

Miller’s offensive line unit allowed the fewest sacks in the Pac-12 during each of his two seasons at Washington State (20 in 2019, 13 in 2018). Under Miller’s guidance in 2019, sophomore offensive tackle Abe Lucas earned All-Pac-12 second team honors and finished as the third-highest graded offensive lineman in the conference at 84.5 according to Pro Football Focus. Offensive guard Josh Watson also earned postseason honors as an All-Pac-12 honorable mention.

Miller's offensive line blocked for Will Rogers to lead the SEC in passing yards per game in 2021 and then again in 2022.

MSU center LaQuinston Sharp earned SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week honors three times during the 2022 season. Sharp became the fourth Bulldog offensive lineman in school history to earn that honor at least three times in one season.

Miller’s unit protected college football’s top passing attack in consecutive seasons as the Cougars led the nation in passing offense, averaging 437.2 yards per game. Quarterback Anthony Gordon averaged an FBS-best 429.2 passing yards per game in 2019 after Gardner Minshew II was tops nationally in 2018 with an average of 367.6 passing yards per game. The Cougars allowed only 20 sacks in 2019 and just 13 in 2018.

In his first season with Cougars, Miller’s group developed into one of the nation’s best offensive lines and was named one of 10 semifinalists for the Joe Moore Award, given to the nation’s best offensive line. In addition, three of his players earned All-Pac-12 honors. Left tackle Andre Dillard led the way earning All-Pac-12 first-team honors, and was later named to the All-America second team by SI.com. He was rated the top pass-blocking tackle in the country by PFF and was a first-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2019 NFL Draft. Dillard became the highest drafted Cougar offensive lineman in program history. Right tackle Lucas was named to the All-Pac-12 second team and later earned Freshman All-America honors by USA Today and The Athletic, while center Frederick Mauigoa earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention.

Hiring someone like Ryan Trevathan might make sense as a TE coach. I presume Nick Sheridan will be OC and QB coach, probably can't teach QB and TE both, so the TE coach spot is now open. Trevathan has been an OC/WR coach, and coached Evan Engram as a GA TE coach at Ole Miss. That still wouldn't explain the SwarmD Twitter post.

Another couple of OL coach candidates.

Mike Bloomgren - Rice HC (currently), OL coach/OC at Stanford (under David Shaw when Christian McCaffrey was RB there), born in Tallahassee, played at FSU, GA at Alabama, has reputation as good recruiter

Bill Bedenbaugh - OL coach at West Virginia, Arizona, Texas Tech (under Mike Leach), Oklahoma (currently)

Indiana TE coach Kevin Wright was mentioned by Rodney Orr as a name floating around as a potential TE coach. A former IMG coach. Considered a really good recruiter and coach with tons of contacts.

Chris Kapilovic is expected to be named OL coach. From Baylor but has OP coach experience at Colorado and Michigan State. No idea if this guy is a good hire or not. Reported on tide100,9

Certainly not saying this guy will be a good coach or not. Know nothing about him but I remember when Pendry was hired and everyone freaked out because he was too old and his NFL OL sucked. He worked out pretty well. Hopefully this guy is underrated as well because in the sec you have to be great in the lines if you want to be successful.

Rodney Orr interview doesn’t seem familiar with him. Just said that there were lots of options and this was who DeBoer chose so we have to trust it’s a good hire.
