Why would $20 million be unlikely? It’s not like Saban wasn’t making north of $10 million a year. It really isn’t that big of a number when we’re talking about the economics of the Bama “brand”.

There's probably a promo code we could apply anyway.

If we want to hire a good coach then who doesn’t have a hefty buyout?

George Costanza is advising Byrne on the financial aspects of this search.

Well,Marlon Humphreys sure isn't helping our recruits stay...lol.

"I'd be in that portal so fast after hearing Coach Saban is retiring"

I know he meant it as a compliment, but dang man!

I know these guys have a tough job and probably feel out of the loop right now, but that's one of the dumbest quotes I've ever seen.

"I'm hearing 20mil might be too much to pay. I'm also hearing it's doable"

I mean, gimme a frickin break here

People on here acting like Bama will have a cup and a "Anything helps" cardboard sign by the offramp to pay Lanning's buyout.

UofA isn't exactly broke.

Yeah...dumb post by Humphrey. Bama has 100 years of championship history. It's bigger than any one coach... including Saban.

Also... wasn't it confirmed Lanning is in Tuscaloosa? If that's the case, I don't think a buyout is a deal breaker.

I think he is just speculating if Lanning is who we want they'll pay the 20M I would think. TAMU paid 75M to get rid of Jimbo.

This is true. We don't have to pay Saban any buyout, whereas some schools pay the fired coach AND pay a buyout to hire a new one

I can tell you, if 20m stands between Alabama and their head coach…they aren’t fretting it. Not like we got 4 prior HCs on structured payouts.

You would think he would understand that as a legacy, so I assume it was mostly a joke.

He wasnt in Tuscaloosa as of 8 PM according to BOL. Even Bryne didnt know Saban was retiring til 2 PM according to them so Lanning wouldnt have had time to get there yet if he is coming.

Unless Saban had a candid convo with Lanning ahead of time or something. Idk

I really think Saban is deeply involved in the new coach selection

Here's some of the post from BOL I dont really care if I get banned over there been debating unsubscribing anyway

quote:

We are told sometime around 2 PM Greg Bryne found out Saban was retiring. The team and coaching staff found out at a short meeting at 4 PM. None of them knew this was coming. Or it would have leaked. There were a lot of surprised people. Saban announcement happened a few minutes later.

quote:

So now the job search is full-force. We've heard a number of candidates. But have been told Lane Kiffin is unlikely. It's also unlikely Sark would Texas or Kirby (UGA). But they could at least have talks. Dan Laning is a possible name but the buyout is in the 20m range. So, some sources say it's very unlikely. Some say it's still doable. We have sent out feelers in dozens of directions. So, trying to sort through what is legit and what isn't. So be patient there.

I don’t think the buyout by itself is a good reason to say it’s unlikely

1. Bama isn’t some poor little school
2. Every coach Bama is likely going after has a buyout
3. $20M is a lot yes but it’s not like it’s $75M and the future of the program’s otherwise extremely profitable athletic department for the next few years is at stake

I just don't buy Saban waking up and deciding to retire with no plan at all for succession. It would go against absolutely everything he's ever said regarding him leaving.

Also those posts read like they were typed up by a 7th grader

Bama athletics managed a $19mil profit in 2022 alone and the geniuses at BOL think $20mil buyout is a problem

Ok lol

Poooooor poor BOL. Used to be basically the only source for inside info. Now Tim is having to send out feelers to “dozens” of people and still doesn’t know squat.

I don't believe all this at all. Stupid.

EVEN if Saban was forced to make this decision today, the situation was developing before. And I'm sure Greg was aware of the possibility before, which means he would have made a contingency offer to the top candidates.

Versus Saban keeping it all to himself and blindsided Greg. Then Greg starts a search from square one.

No.

Something has been going on for a while.

Byrne also has a reputation as a big spender with a history of aiming big with both hiring and facilities.
