Phil
This does make a lot of sense. Seems logical….. Burns hired Oats while somewhat unknown, but an up and comer.

Put Kiffin with Tosh and a couple like him and Kiffin will be set because Alabama mystique will do the rest.

BOL guys are Byrne had no idea until 2pm today. And that due to Lanning’s 20 million buy out he’s unlikely.

Both of these seem highly unlikely. Saban isn't the type to make a brash decision when he woke up this morning without letting the higher-ups know and 20m shouldn't be a huge hurdle for a program that hasn't had to pay a coach to leave in nearly 20 years.

Tosh is currently on staff with Lanning, as well as a few other great recruiters. That may be the motivation, Lanning has shown to be a great recruiter with Kirby and now out in Oregon.

I wouldn’t be mad at all at Kiffen tbh but I’d be pretty pissed if it’s Dabo. You guys are living in the past with Dabo. He’s done in this era.

Our guys would flock to the portal if he was hired. His method of not letting commits visit other schools doesn’t work if you want the best recruits.

Lanning is unproven mostly and young but he’s inheriting a loaded roster and the best brand in CFB.

Kirby was early 40s and UGA his first job when he was hired.

I know Ryan Day is losing to Michigan and their fans hate him but would you guys turn your nose up at 11-1 every year after Saban? Day is actually more consistent than Urban. He doesn’t get blown out to teams like Iowa or Purdue and he recruits really well. Day was unproven and young getting the OSU job.

Day and Kirby have shown going young can work. Trying to hire someone like Dabo isn’t the move. No reason Lanning can’t do something similar. I think it can work. Most important part is keeping our roster in tact mostly.

100% my opinion. In the NIL era, a younger coach who still does it the right way is the way to go. They have less hang ups about the NIL and free agency realities. NFL and college have shown that younger head coaches can work well. Some people want to be coached by the older brother who has his shite together not their dad or grandpas.

This is the direct quote from Tim Watts on BOL he is referring to

quote:

Dan Laning is a possible name but the buyout is in the 20m range. So, some sources say it's very unlikely. Some say it's still doable

So they definitely didn't rule him out.

Why would $20 million be unlikely? It’s not like Saban wasn’t making north of $10 million a year. It really isn’t that big of a number when we’re talking about the economics of the Bama “brand”.

Watts also said this

I am not ruling out Lanning. Just pointing out the buy out.

Saban insisted on two things today: (1) Rees be kept on as OC; and (2) Wolford's forced feeding experiment with his Olinemen not be interfered with. I hope everyone will respect his wishes.

I think he is just speculating if Lanning is who we want they'll pay the 20M I would think. TAMU paid 75M to get rid of Jimbo.

I know these guys have a tough job and probably feel out of the loop right now, but that's one of the dumbest quotes I've ever seen.

"I'm hearing 20mil might be too much to pay. I'm also hearing it's doable"

I mean, gimme a frickin break here
