One of the main keys to Alabama success.

I might be wrong, but it doesn't seem like we have landed quite the elite OL talent the last couple of years in recuiting, so I am wondering if we are going to see some steps back from what we have had on the Oline the last few years. Correct me if I am wrong, I probably am.

TideSports has this projected starting five with projected back ups for 2013. I know this is just a rough guess, but do you disagree with any of it?

2013:

LT - Cyrus Kouandjio / Kellen Williams
LG - Chad Lindsay / Isaac Luatua
C - Ryan Kelley /Chad Lindsay
RG - Anthony Steen / Arie Kouandjio
RT - Austin Sheperd / Brandon Greene

Any changes you see? How good is this oline? Can it be elite or is the ceiling just "good"?

And what about 2014? C. Kouandjio is likely gone. Steen's eligibility will be up, correct?

So what will 2014 look like?:

LT -
LG -
C -
RG -
RT -

The O-line won't be as good as last year but it has the potential to still be very good. Remember the last time we replaced 3 starters on the O-line we went 14-0 the next year.

Another thing that gets overlooked quite a bit is the loss of Michael Williams at TE. He was one of the best blocking TEs I've ever seen. Vogler blocked better than I expected last year, but I do worry that we'll miss BMW.

Also, Leon Brown will definitely be in the mix at RT. I'm not completely sold on him yet but he is considered by most to be the frontrunner at that position

ETA: the new OL coach will really need to hit the ground running

I see Arie maybe as a starter at the Lg spot and I see Leon Brown as a back up to one of the tackle spots

Yep. We basically had 3 OTs when he was on the field.

Agreed...I think Arie and Steen are going to be the starting guards for 2013. Leon Brown I think will get a serious look to take the RT spot vacated by Fluker. James Carpenter and Aaron Douglas were both projected to start when they arrived on campus.

Regarding 2014 ...here is my opinion:

LT - Leon Brown
LG - Arie K
C - Ryan Kelley
RG - Grant Hill
RT - Brandon Greene

We usually look for immediate impact juco players. I'm expecting Leon brown to be starting at right tackle.

I'll be surprised if this isn't the starting OL to start the 2013 season.

LT - Cyrus Kouandijo
LG - Arie Kouandijo
C - Ryan Kelly
RG - Anthony Steen
RT - Leon Brown

That's the same OL I'm thinking for '13

Good responses. Seems like a lot of people are high on Leon Brown. I guess I didn't realize he had the potential to lock down RT immediately and move to LT next year. That would be great.

I have Brown, Kelly, and Arie as the returning starters in 2014. I have no idea who will take the other guard spot. If they move Grant Hill to Guard, I see Saban going into the JUCO ranks to get a LT. I don't know if there's a starting LT on the roster and I doubt Saban will want to start a true freshman at LT to protect the blindside of a young QB. It's either going to be Hill or a JUCO recruit as the 2014 starting LT IMO.

I really wouldn't be shocked at all to see Cyrus come back for his senior year if he hasn't graduated by then. Especially if Arie wins the LG spot and holds onto it.

'13:

CK/AK/RK/AS/AuS
or
CK/AuS/RK/AS/LB

'14:

LB/AK/RK/CL/AuS
or
LB/AuS/RK/AK/BG
or
BG/AuS/RK/AK/LB

The fact that Stoutland is gone may mean some of his "favorites" may not be so lucky with the new guy.

I can see this, but Shepard could definitely beat out Brown.

I would be shocked. He will be a top 5 pick.

I really wouldn't be. He fits the profile of a guy who comes back for his senior year despite being a high 1st round pick. No kids, stable family, intelligent, serious about education. Throw in the possibility of getting to play another year with his brother and I can definitely see it. I also wouldn't be surprised if he goes pro though.

I wouldn't be shocked, either. But. I'd put it at 70%-30% against.

Excellent point but I think the staff does a good job of telling and encouraging guys to "strike" while the iron is hot.

If Cyrus has a good year and gets a high 1st round grade I'd be very surprised if he doesn't leave. And we'll have no excuse if we don't have an adequate replacement because he's been considered a 3 year player since his junior year in high school

Absolutely. We're gonna really miss that guy

I think Chad Lindsay and Leon Brown will be at LG & RT. Lindsay is a nasty run blocker and Bama is gonna need people to step up there.

I think pass protection will still be very solid next year.
