She definitely turned the program around but the fact that she had 3 WNBA draft picks last season (out of 38 total picks) and couldn't A.) secure a top four seed which would have had them hosting first and second round games in Tuscaloosa and B.) could never get over the second round hurdle tells you all you need to know. Maybe I'm misremembering but it also felt like in a lot of our loses the last few years we had a half time or fourth quarter lead and blew it late.

And let me add, there’s no doubt that the SEC is the toughest womens basketball league in the country but when was the last time we upset one of the SEC upper crust like Carolina or LSU or Texas? Hell, when was the last time we even kept those games close? I don’t expect to win the conference and beat everybody but every now and then you need to upset the big dogs just to show you can compete. She seemed to have Tennessee’s number and posted an impressive record against the Vols but they are a shell of what they were under Pat Summit. It was time for a change.

We did beat LSU last season, but that's it. In 2024 we had the lead vs them at the half in both games...and lost by 20 and 19.

I wish her well. I don't know if she was ever going to make Bama a consistent top ten team but the depths she brought the program back from was impressive. People tend to forget that when she came along, Bama was probably the worst team in the SEC and in the entire country.

I don't have a clue who Byrne will hire but I hope it's someone younger who has some fire in the belly

I went to a few women’s games this season. Kristy looked confused many times at the games I attended. Also noticed her looking to her husband in crucial moments to draw up a play etc

it's a fair point but you could ask LSU the same about their S Carolina series? Not much parity in women's hoops.

Sometimes situations just get stale.

Look I agree that we don’t need to be dumping a mint into a non-revenue sport but I think we need to at least make an effort to be contenders … not just compete … in women’s basketball.

I used to cover Bama women’s basketball pretty regularly in the Rick Moody days when we were actually competing for the big trophy but that went away when all of Dottie Kelso’s (me mentioning that name should tell you I was there) cycled through the program and Moody couldn’t maintain that kind of roster without her.

Until the major men's sports maintain elite status, I really don't care about women's sports funding.

If someone has the data, I'd like to see the comparison in spending between USCe women's and men's basketball programs, as well as which of those two sports brought in more revenue.

Over $10M on woman's basketball is incredible - but Dawn Staley's salary is reportedly over $4M a year, so 40% of that woman's BB investment is her salary!

Thanks for the info! Very interesting stats showing the return on investment (ROI) for both those basketball programs.

Looks like Christy Curry was a solid investment because she at least brought respectability back to the women's program regardless of the ROI.

How much should Bama pay for a new quality coach? I'd be curious on the forum's thoughts concerning compensation.

His bio on Rolltide.com says he's the "offensive coordinator."

This would be my choice. (Carly Thibault DuDonis) Solid hire. Young, energetic and seems to be a really good coach.

I don't care what the sport is, Bama should NEVER, EVER be at the bottom of the barrel in the SEC when it comes to spending on a sport. Not saying UA should be spending insane amounts of money on non revenue sports but to be THAT far in last is wrong.

I’d have jumped at that deal if those numbers are correct and I were in her shoes.

You got that right! We have to have women’s sports that are unfortunately non-revenue due to Title IX and rightly so. I have 2 daughters and I want them to have the same opportunities as the guys do. If you have to have them anyway, why not support them as much as possible and try to make them successful? I promise you a successful women’s basketball program will lose less money than a lousy one unless you absolutely gut it. So spend a little more, lose a little less. Take expenditures to at least the middle of the league and let’s roll. Get us a good coach and Roll Tide! I still say the future is bright for women’s basketball and it will grow towards break even more than most other non-revenue sports.
