2008 Alabama-Clemson

Tommy Bowden’s Tigers were supposed to be the best team in the ACC. Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide had welcomed a highly touted recruiting class, but would a team that lost to Louisiana-Monroe really be that much better?

Apparently, yes. Alabama crushed Clemson 34-10, and the game didn’t feel that close. The Crimson Tide would win 11 more before falling to eventual national champ Florida in the SEC title game. It was clear that night that Saban would do exactly what Alabama had hired him to do — make the Crimson Tide a national power again.

The loss was the first step toward a midseason firing for Bowden, but it was the decision Terry Don Phillips made after the firing that altered the course of college football history. He elevated receivers coach Dabo Swinney to interim head coach and gave Swinney the full-time job after the season.

Saban and Swinney would be college football’s two best coaches the following decade. They would meet four times in the College Football Playoff — three times in the national title game. If Saban had taken it a little easier on Bowden, perhaps his top foil might never have been identified.

- announced Alabama on the scene as a national player again
- ended Tommy Bowden's career, effectively
- led directly to Dabo Swinney's career

His other was Appalachian State/Michigan, both because of the magnitude of the upset win of a 1AA school over a Top 10 program (and massive brand) like Michigan AND because it was the first EVER game played on Big Ten Network. Most people didn't have Big Ten Network and the game immediately made people realize it existed and that they wanted it, which was the start of the conference TV networks getting a foothold.

Clemson was highly touted/ranked going into that game.
Had what most said was the top 2 RB's in the country in James Davis/CJ Spiller.
BAMA physically whipped Clemson from start to finish.
Tommy Bowden, with an embarrassing, shocked look throughout the game.
Bowden, like many other coaches, career as a HC, was essentially over after that arse whipping from a Saban coached team.

I knew his career was done when it was reported that he called Saban the next week to talk about the game.

2008 was probably the most fun season I can remember as a fan. 2005 was cool as a student.

Having both as a student I'd have to put 2008 on top but 2005 was a blast. Both were just so unexpected in their heights and the fanbase, especially the young kids like us, so starved to be good.

2008 had winning trips to Atlanta, Athens, Knoxville and Baton Rouge and the bloodletting of Auburn to end the streak. Just can't top that. Pure ecstacy.

Great times.

2008 ended losing streaks to Auburn and LSU.
Also started the current streak to State.

I was a student at Alabama in 2008 and can say beyond a shadow of a doubt it was the most fun I had in a regular season while attending Alabama. While I was present at a lot of classic games from 2008-2012, that '08 Iron Bowl is probably my all-time favorite. Rammer Jammer never felt so good.

I remember like every play in the first quarter seemed like it was by a Freshman. Mussburger kept saying “another freshman”.

Was I the only that thought we were gonna blow it when Clemson ran that kickoff back? Saban had to get the bad voodoo out of our minds

Won in Fayetteville too. Bama had lost 4 out of the last 5 games to Arkansas there at that point in time.

I hate that everyone always keeps bringing up all these greats but they never bring up Glen Coffee. Dude was the absolute truth in those early Saban years.

That Clemson game was so much fun. There were rumors coming out practice that things were different for that team. Atlanta was bumping that weekend.

You knew something special was going to happen when our side of the stadium was full an hour before kickoff while Clemson fans had yet to come in. Sat on the aisle in the middle of the endzone right where our section ended and Clemson’s began. The “Thunder & Lightening” jokes in the second half were great.

Don't forget, this game has a preview that was responsible for this meme...

#24 Alabama @ #9 Clemson

SWINDLE: IRRATIONAL: Alabama. We now reach into the UNO deck and pull out the "Tommy Bowden Flip" card: what are the expectations? Massive success? Flip that, take its opposite, and you lose your turn in the process. We just think Alabama's going to win for reasons that go no further than a bet on Clemson to come through completely on expectations is a bet for defeat.

HOLLY: IRRATIONAL Bama. Because frick Clemson, that's why.

I've had a special place in my heart for Holly Anderson ever since.

I vividly remember MARTA being an absolute rave on the way back after the game with bammers just wildin our. So much fun.

I also remember Spiller running back that kickoff and being like oh shite here we go again.

I could be wrong but I also think there was some added satisfaction that ESPN Radio (or whoever) had Fran as the color analyst. That a-hole had a front row center seat to the rebirth of the dynasty.

Just watched a few clips from that game. You could hear the excitement from our fans. Boy do I miss the old ABC BCS Theme music.
