Sports Illustrated: Ty, I’m going to give you a quote that you said at your introductory news conference with the Rams. You said, “I guess I’m like a redneck in Los Angeles.” Why did you say that and do you still feel a little out of place out here?
Ty Simpson: Well, I said that because I’m a kid from rural west Tennnesee, in Martin, who grew up on just hunting and fishing, and wearing boots and jeans, and then coming to L.A., having a different lifestyle. Also, I went to Alabama, which is about as redneck as it gets, and then coming to L.A. was like a culture shock. I feel like I’m fitting in pretty good, but I still believe that I’m a redneck in L.A.

Alabama is not redneck.
Alabama is preppy as shite.
I get what Ty is saying, but lets be real.
Nothing about college is redneck.

I hate, HATE, that he is perpetuating that stereotype.

Yeah I mean, beyond the fact that Alabama is the business/law school with elements of medical it just doesn’t really jive with the reality.
Like even if you want to say it’s the state university of a place that is stereotypically “redneck” UA is majority out of state students.
Ty just says shite though. He obviously doesn’t think of it as a bad thing as he says he’s one.

Half the school is from California, Texas, Arizona, Illinois, and New Jersey/New York these days by the plates I see around campus every day.

It’s culture shock because he can’t speak Spanish, doesn’t sell drugs, and isn’t on Welfare.

Considering literally two-thirds of the student body is out of state, you’re right. I have mixed feelings about that.

I’m a little surprised at the negative reactions to my post and his quote. I didn’t post it to be rude and don’t think he meant it that way either. I’m definitely a redneck but I grew outside of Tuscaloosa so I never had a chance. And I believe I see a few rednecks in the stands at this softball game.
But I guess it’s fair to question the accuracy given the recent demographic changes in the student body.
Anyway, Roll Tide! I think he could do well with the Rams. Hope so.

Don’t worry about it too much. Folks on here are probably just inundated with memes about Alabama from outsiders who paint it with a broad brush. Alabama is pretty culturally diverse but gets a rub as being nothing but trailer parks so it irks some folks but I don’t think anyone thinks you or Ty meant it negatively

He should cool it a little with the country bumpkin BS he seems to like to embrace.

Sheesh, guys. It’s okay. Alabama (the state) is at least partially associated with rednecks. Redneck Alabama white kids want to go play football at one of two schools… that is a redneck dream. That doesn’t mean that anyone who ever came from Alabama, went to UA, or played for the Crimson Tide is a straw chewin’ sister kissin’ redneck. It also doesn’t mean that any serious person puts stock into these comments. Anyone who does is likely doing so as an exercise in confirmation bias anyway.

This is only post Nick Saban. The influx of Polynesians and Californians from Tosh Lupoi’s recruiting Tua and other popular Californian recruits while Alabama being in the national primetime 8 games a year on average will do that to a university’s student body.

Alabama was never a redneck school. Look no further than the Greek letter culture. It’s always been a playground for the aspirational middle class and aristocracy in the area not the hayseeds.

Exactly this. Even in the 90s and early 2000s it was southern kids and accents but far far from redneck.
It’s like saying “I grew up in Mountain Brook so you know I’m a country boy”. Uhhhh…no. Your dad is a surgeon at UAB and your entire closet came from the Summit.

Lol Alabama is probably the least redneck college of all the deep south SEC schools based on my observations (excluding Texas, UF and Vandy). Most of the student body comes from out of state and the college doesn't embrace "mud riding" and fishing" the way so many other schools do... or did when I was in college at least.

Alabama was preppy long before Saban. I'd argue it was worse in terms of preppiness back then.

I’d also add Ole Miss as it’s extremely preppy. I’ve spent a lot of time in Oxford.
Florida weirdly is more country than I thought it would be in the time I’ve spent there. Not like full on shitkicking country but a toned down version.

I grew up in a rural county but I lived in the absolute middle of the county seat. I was 5 minutes from anything in town. Could basically throw my S10 Blazer into neutral and coast from my house to the access road to my high school if I didn't get caught by the one red light along the way. However, I would not call myself a country boy.
I've been hunting but the vast majority of my time with a rifle was in my military days. I've been fishing but a lot more of that was from hanging out in the bay area with my college friends catching trash fish for the overnight crab traps while drinking. I lived in the city limits a few minutes from the local Jacks and McDonalds and maybe 5 minutes from the Walmart. I wasn't shooting the .270 off my back porch out in the county.
The big difference between the Mountain Brook and Hoover kids I met in college and myself was that I was clearly a part of the working class poor that didn't seem so apparent in K12 growing up because everyone was either poor or one scion of the small handful of families that owned the whole county one way or another...and those rich kids clearly had nicer stuff but they weren't driving Q5s and 3-series like so many in Tuscaloosa. It was a real quick realization that most of the people I thought were rich were mostly land-rich (nothing to sneeze at) but they didn't have the liquid cash on hand like those UAB surgeons.
To some degree, hunting, fishing, muddin, etc are things that require money but that's not really what UA has on campus as late as when I was there in the mid-2000s. They may have a lifted truck or jeep wrangler but that mfer probably only been off road to park for house party. There is also an element of these yankees coming down here to live-action role play as southern planter aristocracy.

So true about UF. Gainesville is in north Florida, aka, “cracker country”.
North Fla is not much different than south Georgia or south Alabama. That doesn’t greatly effect the student body but it has some effect on the ambiance and even more on the fan base.

Absolutely. My wife grew up in Miami. She took a visit to U of Florida when looking at colleges and was in culture shock because it’s just backwoods. Ended up at UCF with a Masters at UAB and now goes with me to Tuscaloosa probably 15-20 times a year for sporting events and loves it.
We went to the last Florida away game and she was like “yup just like I remember it”. Gainesville gets a heavy pass for how redneck it is
