That's because the guys that should be starting for us ended up choosing Kirby and Pruitt. Those two former defensive coaches are now landing several five star front seven players that normally would have chosen us. It's true.

Exactly. Not to mention Dabo.
We need Pruitt back

Patience...we gave up 31 to Arkansas last year, how much did LSU get? The defense will play all four quarters against LSU and Auburn.

I guess it is the day after melt you're going to get when Bama doesn't finish well, but here is something to consider.
With 5:29 left in the 3rd quarter, the score was 52-17. Ole Miss' next 5 possessions went:
8 plays 38 yards
9 plays 83 yards, TD
6 plays 37 yards
6 plays 70 yards, TD
They got HALF their offense on their last 4 possessions of the game when down 5 touchdowns.
Is that what Saban or the fans want to happen? Of course not, but you've got to have just a tad of perspective. Go back and watch those drives. We were subbing liberally during that time with Saban and staff (as they always do) mixing in backups with some starters. Just look at some of the names making the tackles on those drives. Ale Kaho, Tevita Musika, Ben Davis, Braylen Ingraham, King Mwikuta. Other than Kaho, those guys don't see the field much if at all when it matters.
This defense isn't dominant, but it isn't the train wreck some of us is acting like it is. So step away from the ledge. As long as the young guys continue to learn and the injury bug doesn't bite any more, we will be fine.

After a full night's sleep, here is the inconvenient truth about our defense: half of them are true freshmen. They are going to make mistakes, they are going to miss assignments, they are going to fail at making tackles. To steal a line from Pat Dye, "They just puppies, Pawl!"
They are going to go through growing pains all season long. Their inexperience and youth might cost us a game, it might not. We just have to hope that they continue to learn and grow in their roles.

Not knocking our DC, but it doesnt help when our true FR backers are getting coached by a secondary coach.
Our D is not soft. They just can't attack because they are scared they will give up a big play. Many times I see slight hesitation that causes the opposing OL to have major advantage on DJ, Lee.
It would help if Kwon can be elite, because right now he is just average, unless he is getting doubled, which some of you experts can weigh in on.

I am far from an expert but Davis is certainly being double teamed a good bit of snaps. You are right about our linebackers hesitating to fill a gap but they are new to things. I don't really think Golding is as good as coach Saban does but he isn't as bad as some of us think he is either. Our youth is showing in a big way in the running game. Our guys just aren't playing to the standard set by previous defenses.

It's hard to blame our lack of recognition and inexperience when so many defensive players look lost. We can't set the edge. When something works against our guys it works for 4 quarters. Did we have a spy on their QB yesterday? Given that it was obvious he had decided to make himself their entire ground game.
I'm losing faith in Golding. These failures at the simplest execution to read and react, through the MIDDLE of our defense have come against SC and OM, and there is already enough blueprint out there with this team to have the upperclass smacking their lips to get in line for their shot. It's ironic and discouraging to know that Golding is with these ILBers every single day in drills and scrimmages.
We look better in the Dime when Battle is coming up and playing in space and take our chances. Works for Clemson.

and be in the right spot.
This is FAR more important than almost everything else said in this thread.
The freshmen, I understand. They are still learning the D, and their positioning in it. But it's not just the freshmen either. Experienced guys took some HORRID angles yesterday, other times they lost contain when they ABSOLUTELY know better. And it's been happening consistently since the first snap of 2019.
Combine that with the fact that we don't seem very physical, and it's a recipe for disaster. Guys never want to wrap up, especially DBs. They are always trying to body someone up high to make a splash hit instead of tackling. Players get pushed around on every play, and opposing RBs always fall forward.
The way a lot of the more experienced defenders play, comes across as selfish, tbh.
Also, where is the toughness? You play how you practice, and if we play this soft, practice must be soft. Which makes me wonder why we have so many fricking injuries in practice. The excuse I always hear is that Bama practices are more physical than other teams, so injuries are going to happen. But we don't physically dominate anyone. Haven't in awhile. The last good team I remember Bama truly dominating bell to bell, was Michigan St in the playoffs. So why the injuries?

We can’t stop the run up the middle OR on the edge IF they get past the D-line.
Our freshman MAY be good one day, but right now they take very poor angles against quick college players and they just look slow.
Of the two toughest teams remaining, I think we’ll do better against LSU. I’d prefer a team that throws it around.
Auburn (with its quick pace and speed) is the team that worries me.

You guys can whine about players being out of position all you want to, but the bottom line is a linebacker isn't going to outrun a QB that fast to the edge. And it's easier for a QB to get to the edge when all of the DBs are downfield playing man on man with their WRs.
I get how frustrated you are but I feel like the defense just stopped playing at 100% when we went up 45-10. They hit us in the mouth in the first quarter and were leading 10-7. We adjusted and shut them down in the second quarter. It wasn't until we were up 35 in the third that our defense truly became a leaky faucet.
I think the biggest problem from yesterday is the defense didn't finish the game. And that's frustrating because we normally never give up that many garbage time points. It could end up coming back to haunt us. Then again...it might not.

Shy Carter was as big a problem on the first 3 drives as the ILBs yesterday.
He was completely beaten to or blocked out of the edge at least 3 times on QB outside runs.

If John Metchie catches that pass on fourth down, we may not be having this conversation. They likely don't score another TD to make it look worse at the end. As well as Alabama played yesterday, there is obviously a ton of stuff to get straight. They better get right during the bye week before aTm.

Carter has been subpar this year. Not sure what the deal is. The defense has major issues and they need to iron them out before the really hard SEC games.

Plumlee beats both in a foot race and it probably isn’t close. Saw the kid play in HS at oak grove. He’s got enough athleticism to play safety if QB doesn’t work out

Bottom line is we just have to hope there is a bye week jump and a solid performance against Texas A&M that we can build on vs Tennessee and Arkansas before another bye week.
We're still extremely fortunate the way the schedule lays out. It's basically begging us to incrementally get better going into the meat of it in November.

Let's zero on that for a moment. Why were we playing so much man coverage when the QB was leaking out so often? Why not sit down and keep everything in front of us. Why not put a safety in the box and spy the guy? Given this was setting everything else up.

We have over simplified the defense and opposing coaches are out scheming us.

Saban is so fixated on playing man coverage but in times like that sometimes you might want to go to zone to give them a different look.
