Not directed at you specifically, Funky, however it did appear that way. But I'm seeing a lot of people shouting from the rooftops that the defense is fine, Bama is fine, everything is OK. I'm not sure if they are trying to convince others or themselves. There's a long way to go, and luckily, we don't have a major test until November. The test next weekend is looking pretty big right now. But I've seen the other "elites" in college football this season and I don't see how Bama can expect to outscore them all. And our run game isn't good enough right now to keep them off the field. We need the defense to grow up fast. This ain't your daddy's Bama squad.

Auburn is 20 and they are allowing 3.09 ypr.

We are allowing 3.66 yards per rush.
That’s quite the difference.

Auburn has also played much better running football teams.

The two things the defense needs require time.

Experience and fundamentals. Game experience is still coming and fundamentals in practice and in games. We are young but very talented. Once a few more of these guys get the lightbulb on the defensive prowess will increase dramatically. If one of our ILB’s IQ and experience takes a large hike it will be noticeable.

In reality we are just in that learning phase, every single team has different looks these guys have never seen before. Bet the farm that Auburn will run every formation known to man just like Duke. Given what is being asked of guys who would likely be 2nd and even 3rd string this year without injuries we are doing well.

They are young and will improve. And they are doing as bad as some people make it out. 2 bye weeks this year, plenty of time to get the experience needed.

But many people act like it's just a lack of talent, which isn't really fixable and that's just not the case at all. Lots of talent on the field, just needs the experience due to youth.

Funky, you are the ultimate optimist. I haven't given up on them but we certainly have an opportunity for major improvements and I think we drop one if they aren't made.

I think a wise thing to do against the better teams on our schedule maybe starting next Saturday would be for the offense to S L O W I T D O W N. We appear to be able to score at will on anyone. So help keep the young defense off the field. Try to mix in a little more run but more importantly, run the play clock down under 5 every play. Forget going tempo. I’m not advocating taking the explosiveness out of the offense, just milk the clock and shorten the game so the D isn’t out there for 85 plays.

I think our passing game is what it is. Trying to work out that jigsaw puzzle would only stop the momentum. So much of our short and intermediate passing are going for home runs.

The running game is something else altogether. Get in the pistol and stay there. Get in the I-formation and man-up on the goal line.

Brown is back and we look like we are getting some momentum back. No one over there are freshmen. It's time for the offense to get downhill in the trenches. Frankly, Brown, Wills, and Dickerson look like they can do down and nasty with the best of them.

Just out of curiosity … where are you seeing people say "the defense is fine, everything is OK"?

Yes you are.

I say try our very best to keep teams out of our end zone to the best of our ability but when we have the ball, score at will if we can. If we score more than they do we win.
