Is it really fair to expect them to change what they do simply because they took a job at a place with another guy who did things differently’s recruits?
We hired them to do what they do, not to do what Nick Saban did. And there was always going to be a transition period. The problem is last year we could’ve been much better if we hadn’t been hamstrung at QB and this year we are in the running to play for the big trophy with all the flaws, and fans see that we’re on the verge and are impatient and want them to rub a genie’s lamp and make things work right now even though we are still in the middle of a transition.
And again at full efficiency this is not a lopsided pass vs. run offense. In fact Washington in 2023, taking Penix’s 11 sacks out of the equation, had four more runs than passes, 380 to 376.

I don’t think running back quality is the issue here at all. Hill, Riley, and Jam are average 3.6, 3.9 and 3.6 YPC. Every game they basically mirror each other on performance. Theres mistakes here and there but that’s also to be expected.
What I’m seeing on tape here is just play after play being failed to execute from a line perspective. One or two guys are always a step ahead of the other or a step behind. If your line is failing like that, it doesn’t matter what running back you have. We ran a handful of pitch plays last week and only one didn’t get blown up before the back could even go upfield.
Running heavy pull sets and requiring our line to be quick is one thing. Doing it without the personnel to execute is another.
Personally I’d like to see some more I-Formation stuff and just re-orient to some generic power run if we’re hellbent on yards. Limit the pulling, let someone like Roberts just blow his man up in front of him and go man on man

I think we need to stick with the best 5 (that doesn’t include Formby) for them to get on the same page and go with Hill and Riley. Hill will most likely not hit any big runs but he hits the hole and gets positive yards.

I would love that so much! I know he’s only gotten the ball in garbage time but he has always looked like the best runner.

Agree. And Hill doesn’t even need to get big yards. If he can keep us on schedule, that is nearly as effective and will force the defense to (somewhat) respect the run. 3-5 yards consistently on first downs gives us a shite ton of optionality on 2nd and 3rd.

JAM has no vision and dances with the ball. Maybe it is me but to many times it seems like he tries to create opportunities when all he needs to do is just go through the hole to pick up easy 3 to 4 yards. I would be interested in how many runs he has had with a loss.

Yeah, we just dont have the personnel right now to pull of the Deboer/Grubb scheme. Those guys are on the way though...they are just in HS right now. I 100% agree about I formation. If we need to grind for a bit, line up and maul. Tell the backs to explode forward and punish the first guy that tries to hit them.

Our line can't block duo. If you can't pull, can't reach, can't double and climb, can't zone, there's nothing else Grubb can do. Even the guy in video said probably no one in the SEC has dudes that can move a DL out alone consistently. I'm afraid the answer is like someone above said, the guys we need are playing HS ball.

I don't recall seeing him in the practice video yesterday.
He's only played in 2 games so far though, so he could still play in 2 out of the remaining 3 and still redshirt. But hell, maybe his tweet means he decided to burn his redshirt and he's available for all 3 games now

This is now the NIL era. The days of recruiting and building a line that grows with you are over. You may very well have different linemen every season. If the excuse is that he just doesn't have his guys, then he'll never be successful at running in the sec. He has to adapt every year to what he has that year.

I didn't say that it was fair or unfair. We are winning so I don't care either way.

I watched it. I miss having a RB that hits the hole so damn quick it's almost unreal. The OL could be better but our RBs hesitate too much.
JMHO.
JMHO.

Their job is to win games. I understand the adjustment period, and that ultimately they may want to get to a different place, but if they need to adjust to make it work, they should. DeBoer wasn't hired for a four-year build. He was hired to win immediately, and the job that he took allows that.

Our line is not that great but there more instances of our backs dancing than the line losing badly. The execution does need work though. They don’t block zone block well, they don’t run man concepts well, they don’t pull well.
In theory we ought to be a dominant duo team because it is a gap scheme attack that doesn’t require lateral quickness like inside zone scheme. However either the linemen press their vertical release too quickly or the back misreads the blocks badly.
Honestly, I think the problem is that we do not practice the run game enough. I think we invest most of our practice time to 3rd down passing and it shows both ways: we do 3rd down passing situations exceptionally well, we run just about as bad as we have in a generation.

I have a hard time believing we don't practice run game a lot. Maybe we are practicing too many different things in terms of run scheme, and that allows us to not be particularly good at any of them.

The Film Guy, Austin, said an off-handed comment about one of our runs that made me think we’re under practiced on the run game. Could be that we’re trying to do too much like you said.

Exactly correct. And in this NIL era, timelines are accelerated.. adapt, overcome, and win.. we're winning, but it's gonna be tough in the playoffs without a good scheme to deal with the lack of run game.
And why are some y'all taking what this one person says as the Bible? I've seen some say it's scheme, others say it's the players. It's probably both... But it all lands on the coach's desk.
