Defensive Holding on a running play??

Yesterday Isaiah Faga got called for defensive holding on a running play because he “Held a guy up from getting to the LBer”. Im sorry but isn’t that the DLinemans job? I was taught growing up that on the DL you eat up blocks so the LBs can run free….that may be the dumbest rule in football.

I've seen it called in the NFL if the holding by the defense puts the offense at a disadvantage.
Tackling a pulling guard so someone else can shoot the gap, tackling an OL so your pal can sack the QB.
Didn't ever see a good replay of it, but it is rarely called.

No its technically illegal but a lot of DL will try to get away with it. 49ers had a guy years ago who always did it, think it was Justin Smith. But basically an interior DL is gonna hold on tight to two interior OL and try to open up room for his buddies to come around free.

Yeah at lineman camps it was basically God’s law that as OL you know the DL gets to help themselves to fat handfuls of your jersey but you can’t do that in return

Bigger thing was their coach getting a penalty called on 4th down for a first down after the play was over for clapping before the snap.
There was no flag thrown and their QB was under center.
Doubt that play is legally reviewable.
Gave them a FG.

Every other offensive holding call is missed. But this crew wasn't gonna miss the rare defensive holding on a running play

The replay showed the back official threw a flag. But it was total bullshite. The rule is to prevent simulating the snap. Hubbard was just clapping because the offense wasnt gonna run a play. I dont even think UK was snapping off a clap, were they?

That’s another thing…they can’t retroactively enforce defensive Delay of Game…but yet they did.
That’s the whole reason we had to run 4th and 31 because AU safety was clapping and caused our Center to snap it early. And Saban argued for 10 mins and nothing was done about it because they couldn’t retroactively enforce it

Guy must have the eyes of a hawk, because it was the back judge who threw it and it was maybe a millisecond after the ball was snapped.

Unless the UK QB and center have a very...close relationship I don't think he's clapping while under center.

The refs yesterday were beyond terrible. I get so tired of Bama being watched like a hawk for penalties and nothing being done about the terrible calls.

Calling Hill out of bounds in his TD run and Scott’s (I think it was Scott) TD catch incomplete was infuriating, especially when they gave Kentucky a first down off an incomplete pass that led to their only offensive TD.

He clearly grabbed #73 (Kid used to be a reserve for us) and pulled him in keeping the LB clean to make the play

I used to be a Texas HS refereee (and Texas is one of the few states that uses NCAA rules) and what Hubbard did is technically a penalty. IIRC, the rule doesn't differentiate between whether the QB is in a shotgun formation or under center.
The penalty on Faga was weak as hell. I have never, ever seen that called on a defensive lineman.

Yes that was horrible. They let the coach talk them into a penalty. What quarterback uses the slap when he’s under center? That crew should be run off

Does Texas not use common sense though for when the quarterback is under center and the defensive player is clearly celebrating?

A Tennessee LBer did the same thing in the 2022 screw job game. But it was overshadowed by the 20 other bullshite calls and "missed" calls.
I dread playing in Knoxville again as the last two trips there resulted in some serious home cooking for the Viles.
