It was an odd second half, one I wouldn't read too much into. UGA was in desperation mode and Bama took their foot off the gas. If Bama was up 24-7 at the half they probably win the game going away. They were up too much, as odd as that seems.

That pullover he is wearing is sharp. Wonder if it is available online anywhere.

If you’re worrying about needing more time up 23 entering the second half then you have a bigger problem than time management
I still think it was risky and shades of UCLA-A&M but the thought process of guiding the quarterback and needing to minimize the dead time makes sense

I'm honestly shocked by the replies. So many bruised egos who STILL think they could manage the clock better than the best coach in college football.
You folks are truly special, as in retarded.

I have a bunch of pullovers from the big 3 in Tuscaloosa. Locker Room, Chris Mobley, and Shirt Shop. This is a Shirt Shop Custom. Just pick the pullover and add the logo.

I'm not saying I can manage the clock better than DeBoer. And I know he's got access to a lot more situational information than I do (as in, he's got all of it, and I have none).
I still maintain it was the wrong approach, and it nearly cost us the game. What's interesting, BasedCrimson, is that you apparently agree with me as well:

Like he said, if we were up by 2 scores, then yeah, run clock.
Since we were up by 18 points with 13:43 left in the game and had the ball on the Georgia side of the field, we should run clock in that situation. We both agree on that, right?

Welcome to the short bus. I've got dibs on the window seat.

You come across about as poorly as possible. The weird all caps and childish “owns” and “retardeds” reads like Willy T. If you aren’t trying to troll as an alter, I’d suggest toning it down for your fellow fans.

Awesome. Thanks for sharing that

Whereas I think a lot of fans assumed he was just being careless.
No no one thought it was carelessness but fans wanted answers about his philosophy and now we know. Btw some of you snow flakes (not you in particular) but those that complain every time a fan brings up a legitimate question about game management, QB decisions or whatever need to quit being crimson colored fan boys with your lips firmly planted in the coaches arse and understand that this is a forum for discussion.

Coach didn’t own anyone, he handled it with class.
If I were a fan of another team I’d hate Alabama so much, especially how this season has gone so far. Like, how in the hell do they get that coach after Saban. Our coaching staff is top notch.

I don’t think he owned him but he did as politely as human possible explain how he saw the situation differently.

He got it from Mobley’s over in the Galleria of Tuscaloosa (Local Roots, Edgar’s, etc). Seen some of the coaches come in and out of there. I got my pullover similar to his from there one time after getting lunch.

We have a head coach who's won 90% of the 120 games he's coached.
Meanwhile you have fans who've never played nor coached a down of football in their lives bitching about clock management after we WON a game.
And we're gonna believe that you never bitched at Nick fricking Saban for keeping Bob or Golding or Rees on staff.
You're a fricking idiot.

I think that was a fair, reasonable question. I think DeBoer gave a fair, reasonable answer.

Maybe next time you post read what you wrote and if it sounds like a Barstool headline delete that shite.

It’s not necessarily true that Alabama could have run the clock down that far. (1) UGA may have hurried more and used their TOs in such a way as to save more clock. (2) The 2 min warning would also have come into play.
And though it’s true that UGA could have shortened the game some. They could have shortened it such that there was time for the UGA score but not the Williams/Milroe moment.
All of this to say that unless you can reasonably see the end of the game, the clock is a crapshoot. Unless you have the kind of running game no one has anymore, you just don’t have a way of controlling the clock for a long time, so typically you may as well try to keep scoring.

If you're managing a game in a way that benefits your opponent, you're not putting yourself in the best position to win. If you enter the fourth quarter winning a game by 18 and you're on the opponent's side of the field, you bleed the clock. If you're still ahead by 12 with less than 10 minutes left, you bleed the clock. If you're still ahead by five with less than six minutes left, you bleed the clock. Not doing so is giving your opponent entirely too many chances to come back.
If you aren’t going to run clock it just seemed strange to put the defense in a passive scheme.
We all get it that Kirby and Schumann were throwing NFL looks at Milroe that he had no chance to read after 15 seconds (no one could until the play snaps). The college football nerds did an outstanding job of breaking down some of the cover 6 looks they ran which are even slowing down NFL offenses, highly recommend checking it out.
We were going to have to adjust or bog down.
We just kind of ran a somewhat more vanilla version of what we did in the 1H attacking the edge with the RPO and snapped the ball at 15-20 seconds.
Meanwhile UGA realized we weren’t pressuring them like we had been so they had time to go vertical on our secondary and did so to great effect.
I’m not even complaining, just observing. The 1st half was the best offensive scheme I’ve ever seen at Alabama outside of what Sark did with far more talent in 2020. It was quite simply a perfect half of football schematically. Life rarely allows perfection to persist so a letdown was inevitable.
