I’m kinda liking the fact that he doesn’t really care who we like as a DC or whoever. He is going to get the folks that he feels will win for him and carry his philosophy.

That 1986 team got spanked by the eventual undefeated national champion and lost by a total of eight points to two outstanding teams. It’s not like they really sucked or underachieved. And in that pre-BCS and pre conference championship era, the Sun Bowl was not dogmeat.
I didn’t say the guy was one of the greatest coaches in the history of the school. I very specifically said he did an excellent job in a difficult situation. I stand by that.
And I never said he was warm and cuddly, but there was some dead wood in the program in 1982 and someone needed to be the heel to clear it out and move things forward. He had the coglioni to do that and take the heat.

Except for ‘84 … and the last game sort of redeemed that LOL … we competed strongly under Perkins. We just didn’t dominate.
I have high standards and expectations, absolutely, start every year wanting to go undefeated and win the big trophy.
But after the last 17 years people have gotten so caught up in “if we don’t have absolute assurance that we’re going to dominate, it’s all over” … that IMO is the motivation for half the panicked threads on this board from people turning around in the floor seeking absolute clarity and certainty about what’s going to happen in September and October even though it’s the second week in January and it’s been, what, 48 hours since we introduced DeBoer … when what just happened was cataclysmic. Just like what happened in 1982 was cataclysmic. And things are going to have to play out and we’re going to have to let the guy we hired do what we hired him to do.

Goode blowing his knee out in '84 killed us. Carruth had to play a lot and he was still coming back from knee surgery.

Paul Ott Carruth, haven’t thought of that name in a while. I had a one-on-one interview with him one time, nice guy. Tough player and a good back but no Goode. ‘84 really was a “what might have been” season but we still never got absolutely run out of the stadium, best I can recall.

Had one of the top classes in the country lined up when he left, and it fell apart when Curry was announced.

Alot of the negative perception of Perkins is due to his awful stint at the Bucs after he left & him being tied to the Gene Jelks scandal which we now know wasn't true.

I think the record shows that he did a below average job in a pretty good situation.

I think some of too it is butt hurtness over him leaving for the pros, but again the deal he got with the Bucs would have turned any coach’s head.

Covered my first Bama game in 1978. Covered my last one in 1996. Got to go on a few bowl trips including 1982 Liberty Bowl. I saw some things LOL.

Some of these guys have zero perspective, knowledge, or even know what the hard times looked like. For example, the poster the other day who was comparing the decision to hire CKD to the Dubose hire.

He was a 100% a-hole, but he was a good coach that found a pretty empty cupboard when he arrived. Lots of kids (ex.. Bo Jackson) didn’t sign with Bama because they weren’t sure Bryant would be around .
Perkins recruited really well.. Biscuit, DT are just 2 examples. He would have eventually won big at Bama imo.

Amazing how our worst coaches have a miracle season on their resume. IIRC Perkins had a 10 win season and so did Franchione & Shula. Curry and Dubose won an SECC. At least we know Deboer will have a at worst a 10-2 season at some point.
