That parade had nothing to do with Surtain. He and his father could care less. Just listened to local BAton Rouge radio host Jimmy Ott who knows Sr. he said this had everything to do with he felt he would be better prepared for the NFL at Alabama. The championships are just a plus.

That just means more scholarships for next year and more room for grad transfers that have more than 1 year to play. Thinking about this, I'm not all that worried now, in fact, I bet we have a bunch of silents. I'm convinced we'll bring in 2 RB's, 4-5 LB's, and 4-6 DL. Saban and staff know they can't be as picky and need to hit those key positions hard, and I'm convinced they will get pretty much everyone they want.

That national title was won with number one classes every year. We are currently sitting at 8. I trust Saban will find ways to improve to next year, but we need more than we got in this class.
I think we are lucky that this one lands directly behind what could end up being the best and most diverse class we've had in the Saban era last year
QB - Tua Tagovailoa
RB - Najee Harris
RB - Brian Robinson
OT - Alex Leatherwood
OT - Jedrick Wills
WR - Henry Ruggs III
WR - DeVonta Smith
WR - Jerry Jeudy
TE - Major Tennison
DE - LaBryan Ray
DE - Isaiah Buggs
LB - Dylan Moses
And those are JUST the guys who played significant snaps and played well last season. It doesn't even count the following guys who people raved about in backup/practice roles
WR - Tyrell Shavers
OLB - VanDarius Cowan
ILB - Chris Allen
DT - Phdarian Mathis
S - Daniel Wright
And other guys who are "just freshman" waiting their turns (McKinney, Randolph, Townsend, McDonald, etc).
Just an unbelievable class in 2017. This year basically, outside of DT, supplemented that one with elite players at CB and a couple pass rush types.

Shavers is going to be a monster if he develops right.

Gonna be a rough day for the sunshine pumpers on this board who were ready to let us "realists" have it today. Sometimes it's ok to call a spade a spade. Saban botched this class by hiring a shite recruiting staff last year and we're paying the price. Call it what it is.

This is what I'm curious about

That's why I'm not too worried. We still have more talent than anyone else in the country. Our last few classes were incredible and will carry the load. Just need to get back on track next year and hope this isn't a sign of things to come on the recruiting trail.

I'm willing to bet that he will have at least90 percent of the players signed in December to avoid this kind of situation again.
You're spot on. Saban and the staff are gonna take no prisoners on the recruiting trail next year, and they won't/can't afford to be picky at LB and DL, so they will be signing a large number of quality players that tell them they want in on the class. Plus, the recruits in the 2019 class will probably take the 20 seconds to google how razor thin we will be and will jump on an offer right away, something the 2018 kids were either not capable of doing, or were reluctant to jump on board.

Not only that, but as Rammer pointed out, Saban has already resolved our issues by hiring a new fleet of young, top tier recruiters.
Based off our coaching moves, it shouldn't be a surprise that this year didn't go the way we may have wanted it to (despite it still being a great class).

Be interesting to hear Saban comments about how this unfolded

So if we just look at it from 2017/2018.........
QB - Tua Tagovailoa
RB - Najee Harris
RB - Brian Robinson
OT - Alex Leatherwood
OT - Jedrick Wills
C - Emil Ekiyor
WR - Henry Ruggs III
WR - DeVonta Smith
WR - Jerry Jeudy
WR - Waddle?
TE - Major Tennison
DE - LaBryan Ray
DE - Isaiah Buggs
DT - P. Mathis
DT - Christian Barmore
DE - Eyabi Anoma
LB - Dylan Moses
CB - Savion Smith
CB - Patrick Surtain
S - Josh Jobe
CB/STAR - Eddie Smith
K - Bulovas/Jones
P - DeLong
Would have really liked to have added some more depth at DT and some ILB, but other than that...........that's a pretty well stocked and diverse group of players from 2 recruiting classes.

So, generally speaking that weekend was kind of a bust, although admittedly for the first time, this year. That being said it probably will not matter cause I'm pretty sure after this year Saban will have the vast majority of next year's class signed during the early period.

We did not drop the ball we shot for the moon. Instead just going after a player to fill a spot we went for the best and got beat. Plain and simple. In the past people freaked out when it looked like we settled on a few players to fill spots.
People need to remember some of our best classes came with Smart and Pruitt leading the charge. These guys can recruit and we have to up the ante and step up our game now as the SEC is going to be a war zone.

The "price paid" for that botched staff included
so I'm going to give Saban a pass for this eighth ranked recruiting class.
