I ran some 3-3 while coaching HS. You can use it as a base if you want but it is more effective against pass heavy teams bc it gives you flexibility in coverage and you can bring pressure from different places with quick LBs ... however , it can be problematic against physical run teams like UGA and TENN and what UF used to be

**precursor, I typed this out and realized I started rambling a bit**

I know Georgia isn't I formation old school football anymore, but they will run some stuff that resembles that concept of "pro style" (even though that's the spread now).

Nickel is basically everyone's base defense now though and we may be forced into the 3-4 for stretches of the game for the first time all year against Georgia. I'm hoping the patience with DJ Dale is thin saturday because that spot is going to be key to stopping their run game.

If Georgia can't run the ball then we will beat them senseless. Bennett doesn't have enough high level throws in the repertoire to win a shootout with us. On that same note, if we manage to jump out to an early lead then it could get out of hand quickly for Georgia.

It's like the Ravens in the NFL. They are a top 2 team with an elite defense and running game and some of the best weapons in the league, but they are simply not built to play from behind. When they get down early they usually end up getting boat raced.

It's obviously a big if, and I don't think Georgia will be able to stop us much, but if the not stopping us much occurs in the first quarter and we manage to string stops together early in possessions in the first quarter, it's going to put the game squarely in their QB's hands.

I'm more optimistic today than I was saturday night after a day of drinking. I got to thinking about what wins big games now and it's elite offense. I've seen enough from Mac to know he's playing at an absolutely elite level. That pass in the redzone to Forristall on Saturday going right to left, Miller was his 4th read on that play and he got to him in a hurry, it's what you see from the elite passers on Sunday but rarely on saturday. Tua never made it to that point. His confidence stems from his prep and he trusts his guys. I just don't see it really being defensible over the course of 4 quarters. This is a completely different offense than one lead by Tua. Georgia fans and others just see the production and say Tua > Mac and Jeudy Ruggs Smith Waddle > Smith Waddle, and all of that may be true, but if you pay attention you can see that this offense is a whole lot different than the one in love with the killshot. We look like the 2019 LSU offense. Mac is completing 86% of his passes if you take out throw aways and 80% including them. That's better than Burrow level efficiency and difficult to do against anyone. Our weapons are on par with theirs a year ago and make no mistake, we are much more talented up front than they were. This offense could be an all timer.

Our defense has a long way to go though

First of all, it should be physically impossible for Golding to coach a Bama defense in practice this week. He should still be walking his butt back to Tuscaloosa, thinking about his many transgressions.

I'm a believer that offense beats defense these days. The rules and gameday video just keep sounding down that college football has undergone a complete transformation. Alabama is about to put that belief to the acid test this weekend. Mac and Sark are going to have to "science" the hell out of this gameplan. Georgia has guys they will have to scheme to get open in their offense. We just have guys that will get open. I expect our offensive line to hold their own and I expect Najee and the running game to allow us to control drives and set up our lethal play-action pass approach down the field. A brilliant special team play by Waddle might also be in order.

And yes, I truly believe it is possible for Golding to not cough up his spleen in this one and our guys will actually get off the field from time to time.

Does offense really beat defense in the SEC? I believe.

Couldn’t agree more. You need a combination of seriousness and cockiness that our guys appear to desperately lack. One of my favorite quotes from any athlete is when Jon Allen was asked in an interview “how did y’all do this? Teams just simply don’t do that” (talking about the incredible defensive performance they just had), and Allen responds, without hesitation “Alabama does.” Everything about the way he answered that question embodies that winners mentality that he, and the whole defense, had. You could just tell that every single one of those guys thought just like that.

This defense desperately needs someone like Reuben or Allen in the middle who has a lot of frick you energy. There's just zero attitude from these guys. I thought Harris may have had that edge to him, but I'm starting to think I was wrong.

Good read. You can tell by reading his quotes that players have got to love playing with him... humble hardworking guy

We have the players with the right attitudes on defense. But, we don't have the right DC for them. Reuben, Jon Allen, etc. didn't have to play under Golding. There's been enough player turnover during Golding's time at Bama to see he's the problem with the defense.

I moved that DJ Dale article (written yesterday) here where folks were discussing one of his quotes that's in it.

College Football: Ranking all 14 SEC starting quarterbacks ahead of Week 7 (PFF)

quote:

1. MAC JONES, ALABAMA

While Jones performed well filling in for Tua following his injury, it didn’t look like he was ever going to be that type of elite-level player. He had a 79.5 passing grade in 2019, but a lot of his success came when under pressure. In fact, he had a higher grade under pressure than he did in a clean pocket. That usually raises some red flags, as we know pressure performance isn’t stable like clean pocket passing is. So far in 2020, Jones has shown we shouldn’t have worried about that fact.

Jones has posted the three best PFF grades of his career to kick off the season, resulting in a 93.6 PFF grade for the season. That mark is the best among Power 5 quarterbacks — even higher than Trevor Lawrence. He has displayed pristine ball placement and thrown 82.4% of his passes accurately, 22.5 percentage points higher than the next-best SEC quarterback. No one has had more open throws created in the conference than Jones (69% of passes have been to an open receiver, highest in SEC by five percentage points), but even on the few throws he’s made into a small window he has been pinpoint. With this version Jones at the helm, Alabama will be in contention with teams like Clemson and Ohio State.

Someone on Twitter who claims to have played for Golding in college told me that Golding is a better defensive coordinator for Bama than Pruitt or Smart.

I almost choked when I read that.

Reece Davis was on jox this morning, and they were discussing the Ala Ole Miss game. He was asked if he enjoyed the game. Davis said he didnt really like it. There was plenty of drama but people say football has changed. David said no it hasnt, the rules have changed. Davis said that Baylor offense is basically just 7 on 7 football and he doesnt like it at all. He was asked about Mac Jones, and Davis said as that game went on there was plenty of drama, and you just sat there and wondered if anyone would make a play on defense. Will there be a sack, a broken up pass, someone make a tackle, but in the second half you just knew the team that didnt score a TD was going to lose the game. So, there was enormous pressure on Mac Jones to score a TD every time Ala got the ball. David said people dont understand how much pressure he was under to be almost perfect.

And, BTW, that isnt the offense that Kiffin was running at Alabama. That is the Baylor offense that Art Bryles Jr helped Kiffin install at Ole Ms.

Probably based on reports that some players from Ole Miss have tested positive, and extrapolating from there that Alabama players may be quarantined based on contact tracing. To my knowledge there's no hard information confirming that. For all we know, the Ole Miss players who tested positive didn't even play Saturday.

Yeah that’s likely it because I know for a fact our players are locked down during the week.

I would assume Saban or someone would have mentioned it by now if it was a problem
