I'm in the same boat about the defense also. I was blaming golding but I really think we lost our edge physically the last 2 years on defense. Now that this whole S&C fiasco has me second guessing blaming golding. We definitely lost the bama factor last year. Games we usually dominate were hard to watch because teams were punching us in the mouth and we weren't able to do anything about it

Adding to that, the communication issues recently brought to light inhibited our ability to play fast and play as a unit with one heartbeat. Several players were either still thinking or on their heels just after the ball was snapped, and that just can't be on an elite defense.

Pretty spot on, both of you.

Again, I go back to the whole change in offensive philosophy. When we went to the B12 offense, we sold our soul. We became softer on both sides of the ball. It's heresy here to question the golden child, but I'm not unhappy Tua is gone. We got beat on short yardage downs more in the last two years than I can remember. I want to see us go back to a hand in the dirt, fire out and drive people off the line of scrimmage offense.
I bet, coincidentally, our defense would get better.

We don't actually run the Air Raid. If we did, our RBs carries would have dropped by 70% and we'd have 2 RBs with 50+ catches. We'd also literally never line up under center.

Also, teams have had very explosive, modern offenses while simultaneously fielding defenses that pushed people around, just not us the last 2 years. Clemson won 2 titles doing it. Ohio State has been that for years. GA will be that very thing this coming year.

Most of the analysis regarding Big12 defenses being less than indicts the Hurry Up's creation of more plays and drives in a game, the tendency of certain coaches there to willing put their defenses in bad positions, and the lack of defensive talent in that conference. While I agree that is certainly possible that Alabama lost an edge recently regarding it's culture, there's no requirement for the defensive philosophy to be the same as or predicated on the team or offensive culture. The defensive culture can be a thing to its own, and is and has been at many schools. Michael Vick's Virginia Tech is a great example of the offense being one thing, and the defense being another, as the defense was defined by Foster's lunchpail mantra.

I agree with you that we need to get back to eating faces on the defensive front 7, but I'd hate to throw the baby out with the bath water and abandon a modern offense. The points are just too much to pass up, and teams with pedestrian offenses have been smoked out of the playoffs. I don't think we could win championships with a conservative, pound 'em offense, and GA the last few years is perfect proof.

There's a reason saban went to this type of offense though. He sees the writing on the wall with the rules leaning towards the high powered rpo offenses. It's no longer a defensive game and were going to have to accept that to a certain extent. Look at Georgia last year. That was a nasty defense and they still couldn't slow down LSU. I do agree though that our offense scoring fast does make our defense look much worse with the amount of opportunities we give the opposing teams to score

UGA's defense against LSU would've looked better had they had some offensive help. That game was a mix of LSU's offense being great and UGA's offense being outdated.

Yet again, Markail Benton has been left off the Alabama roster with the updates.

From what I’ve been hearing, it isn’t a transfer portal case, which is why he hasn’t entered it up to this point. Will be interesting to monitor.

Georgia had a bunch of injuries at wide receiver, too. Plus I think that Pickens was suspended for the first half of the game for fighting in the GT game. I know one of their top guys and Cager both had serious injuries.

The point I was trying to make was how many points LSU's offense put on one of the best defenses in the nation

No doubt and I'm not disagreeing with you. Georgia's offense was outdated and the injuries to their wideouts hurt them even worse. I'm interested to see how Alabama's offense looks this year. Very interested to see how good Bryce Young is at A Day.

I hope that he gets drafted top five and has a great NFL career. It's the only thing missing since Saban arrived. A first round QB pick.
