So we're all aboard the Milroe train now?

Just feels like at this point he's the most likely option given the ups and downs of the other guys.

But who the hell knows

I reserve the right to post that gif every time he makes a great play this season.

Hopefully I wear that motherfricker out.

Like the donkey gif from years ago.

I think the Milroe thing is exactly what most of us know and acknowledge. Rees and his style of offense with misdirection and QB runs and easy throws will give Milroe a chance to be pretty good most of the time.

Yeah, I have a feeling we're going to see a lot of handoffs, short TE-type dumps, and some quick passes to a speedster like Malik Benson out of motion.

In other words, distribute the ball in front of the defense and see if anybody can make some plays.

Vertically I think it could be there, but we'll probably have to set it up and then hope for the best when we spring it.

It might be a "flip the field" sort of ball-control offense, which is fine until that random game where the defense just completely breaks down and we get in a track meet.

frick no. I just see a path to a somewhat effective offense with him provided the playcalling + personnel play to his strengths, and the read I get on Buchner and Simpson from all the reports from randos like Boz and media people who were at the scrimmage is that they're a couple of JAGs who do not have any major strong points you can take advantage of. Could be wrong, but that's the feel. In a perfect world Lonergan is a year older.

Yea the clips I saw looked impressive to me. ND usually recruited pretty well in the trenches and TEs but I don’t remember a great WR in the last several years . Rees had to scheme guys open . Like you said SOG, lots of rub routes and scheming guys in the flats . Maybe I am too optimistic about him and what he can do with our talent bc we are used to BoB and his seemed “somebody run and get open, ready break! “ play calling

However, if you look back at the 6.5 quarters he played against A&M and Arkansas and just purely look at production, it really wasn't bad (other than the turnovers which were awful and gave A&M a chance along with Golding gonna Golding).

My concern wasn’t even the turnovers specifically.

It was the lost plays and drives related to the guys he wasn’t seeing downfield. Seeing it live I think you pick up on downfield stuff that gets missed on TV and he had guys running wide open routinely that he just didn’t find.

Ultimately he was a young QB running a system not suited to him with a mediocre OL and a ton of pressure on him to be Bryce Young. Just like Mac had turnover issues trying to live up to Tua post injury, that pressure is real.

But with an entire offseason to learn, get comfortable and settle in as the guy he looked completely outmatched during A-Day against safety blitzes he should’ve been dealing with since middle school.

I truly believe he can be All-SEC.

But to be successful he needs:
-an improved OL as was just stated above
-a scheme that accentuates his strengths while not asking him to be BY -to hit the intermediate throws to keep the safeties back
-Limit the turnovers

Can you imagine if we were going into this season with these 4 guys and BoB was still in charge?

1st and goal at the 2 yard line with 3 straight incompletions to avoid a sack/turnover. FG attempt.

No worries at all! Just pointing it out. That fumble actually pissed me off worse than the others because it was Jase and not a full time all year starter.

One of my biggest concerns with Milroe is when his adrenaline is pumping early in the game, will he continue to put too much heat behind the short throws?

Balls on the edge that ricochet off the WR/RB hands, helmet, or body are pick-6's waiting to happen. He and Rees have some work to do in getting his emotions under control for the 1st couple of series each half.

He has a lot of heat on his short throws, I even noticed it in last years game. Hopefully he gets a rhythm and can stick with it.

How would you plan for Milroe if you were a DC?

My guess is stack the box, take away the run game and over the middle passes and make him beat you with sideline throws and the deep ball.

4-2 Nickle
Mush in the middle with hands up
Squeeze from thw slot side with an eye toward batting the ball down
Contain to flat from the other edge
Spy with the slot side LB
Tight man on the corners / inside leverage
Inside leverage - off of the LoS with the nickle back
Two deep Safeties playing halves zone and breakout run support

Funnel his best options to the inside and block his view. The LB's should have a big day or look really bad - not much in between.

Easy. Load the box. Blitz and play man2man with 1 safety over the top.

The reason Milroe stares down his receivers is because that's the only way he can make an accurate pass. So all you have to do is pressure him on every down, and keep him from running. Man2Man will eliminate his check down option.

I think we're going to see a situation similar to Jalen Hurts in 2017 where at some point this season, we're going to be forced to play the better QB, and only then will Saban make the switch.
My guess is that at some point in the second half of the Texas game, Saban will make the QB switch, but it will probably be too late. Hopefully if we lose to Texas, we will have discovered our best QB, and set us up to win the rest of our games.

OR Milroe doesn't win the job, and everything will be fine.

Bottom line in my mind is this - if this offensive line lives up to it's potential and can move the LOS then we have a chance to be a very consistent and difficult to defend offense, even if the QB isn't a consistent passer.

This will be a big key. Can our OL block in space. If we are going to utilize a rolling pocket and the types of plays you mentioned earlier, our OL will have to do a 180 in style and skill set from last season where we did very little of that.

We will also have to be able to stretch the field and defense. We can't just use flats and swing passes with QB runs or we're looking at a full box of defenders. And I still think with the type of multiple offense Rees wants to use, we need a QB that can handle pre snap reads well.

If our OL sucks none of this matters anyway lol.

I do agree. We need to send some down the field to keep the defense honest. And I’m not talking punts I’m talking well thrown balls.
