I like it. Sounds like a solid hire for position coach

I still remember driving to work one morning and hearing him (when he was still in Huntsville) basically say that anyone that thought Chavis was a defensive mastermind was a moron. I feel like he is a good judge of talent.

Cole also still thinks very highly of Pete Golding.

Former Southern Miss DC Austin Armstrong is joining @AlabamaFTBL’s defensive staff as a position coach and is already on campus, sources tell ESPN. He will take the spot vacated when Charles Kelly left for Colorado. @JohnDBrice1 first reported Armstrong was a strong candidate.

That pertains to the on-field staff size limit. It doesn't mean he'll be safeties position coach.

JMO but taking Kelly's spot doesn't mean he will be the safety coach but just means he is a number against the total number of assistants.

We'll see.

Yeah, I just saw Chris Low say that. I would imagine they can use him wherever they need him. Does he have a position group that he has a background with?

From the article jatebe posted above
quote:

Southern Miss’ Austin Armstrong is expected to join the on-field coaching staff, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Armstrong was the Golden Eagles’ defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach but is now set to fill a to-be-determined assistant coach role in Tuscaloosa.

Mainly LBs, but he was an assistant defensive line coach at West Georgia (Div. II) for one year early in his career so maybe he can also coach our OLBs (although that would mean we'd be moving Hutzler to either an off the field position or letting him go altogether.
