This one hurts a lot because it was Auburn. If this had been a 1 v 2 vs say Florida I don't think fans would be as upset. Today sucked but this team will be judged based on what they do in March and I think we should wait until after the NCAA Tournament to render a verdict.

We’ve all been complaining but they don’t care. No clue why we give the media better seats than our own students. Stick the media up in the corner and move the students down to that area.

Well I’ve had time to calm down.

My opinion is…we can’t shoot the ball in Coleman Coliseum. Been that way all year. We played well other than that.

We can beat everybody in the country even if we don’t shoot well…..except Auburn and Florida. We are gonna have to shoot well to beat those 2 teams.

Also Drop Coverage is a shite defense and Oats needs to look in a different direction scheme wise.

If I'm not mistaken... Purdue killed us when we played drop coverage.

DROP COVERAGE has gotten us beat in multiple big games over Coach Oats tenure here.

UConn (2x)
Gonzaga
Purdue
Auburn
Florida
Tennessee

We can't keep allowing opposing guards to get a rhythm offensively.

HEDGE HARD &
SWITCH EVERYTHING!

Offensively, just run the offense through Aden Holloway or Labaron Philon...it's that simple.

Mark Sears has been playing with a ton of pressure on his shoulders and you can see it. Take the pressure off of him.

I will say this though...(HE GOT FOULED ALL GAME)

Drop coverage is an analytic defense. Its forces team to take Mid range shots…the most inefficient shot in basketball.

But what it really does in todays game is gives extremely talented guards plenty of space to catch a rhythm shooting

It’s decent against lesser guards but if you have a “dude” like Harper, Miles Kelly, or Cryer they’ll gladly accept that shot all day. Nate alluded that we took too many bad shots. I agree. Nelson took a three early in the game without even looking towards the basket. Those kind of plays get you beat against elite teams. Honor each possession and take care of the basketball. Auburn deserved to win that game yesterday and it hurts me to say that, but it’s true. They valued the basketball and took good shots. They played team basketball and defended well. We selfishly dribbled around and took contested threes. Going forward I’d like to see fresh blood running the offense. Philon and Holloway get downhill quickly and spray the ball to shooters. There may be growing pains but it will be worth it. Sears is who he is at this point. He needs to be off ball as spot up shooter. Sort of the role he played on the team with Brandon Miller and Quinerly.

What’s wild is we were shooting really well in warmups and they weren’t. But when the lights came on it completely flipped.

They shot 3's very well and we shot them poorly. In today's game of basketball that's going to be a loss close to 100% of the time.

Using Sears as the initiator of the offense late in the game cost us everything. He's just not as good near the basket as Philon, or even Holloway. He needed to be the guy waiting on kick outs.

We also shot terribly around the rim in general. Well below our season averages. I think that hurt us more than the 3s did. Took ridiculously stupid shots all game.

Lastly, the bad start was the game. 9-0, and they won by 9.

I don’t think the drop coverage is going anywhere. It’s analytics driven and I think it’s as much of Oats philosophy as his offensive scheme. I do think though you have to be able to make in game adjustments if the other teams’ guards are absolutely shredding it.

Yep. We would expend a lot of energy clawing back. Can’t spot the best team in the country a 9 point lead to start each half and expect to win.

I will say this, and I don’t have numbers to back it up. But just from watching the games, I think the defensive game planning, scheming, and adjustments have suffered a little since Charlie Henry left.

Between Grant and Cliff there we 5 missed dunks. Put the ball inside the fricking box and it'll fall.

Also, when we finally did make 3s, we totally abandoned attempting it.

The rest of the schedule we play is really difficult. But if the team wants to be what they’re able to be, they have to step it up to another level. We were beaten by Auburn’s defense ;our shot selection, true, was poor. We have to get back to playing the level of defense like we did last year, which that, and hitting clutch shots, led us to the final four. Oats has to find a way to get Sears in rhythm. He’s a spot up shooter, not a driver or slasher,

I mean I get the frustration with Sears, but the guy leads the sec in free throw attempts per game. That's a very critical stat. If you don't believe it just put yourself in the opponents shoes. Playing against teams who have one guy that can put half your team in foul trouble midway through the 2nd half is a really big factor and it's demoralizing as hell. Sears can shoot, but if we move him to off guard teams will rejoice. He is a fairly easy cover and he will be switched on the entire game and opponents will basically say just make Philon beat us. Sears has flaws in his game and will at times play selfishly. But we came into yesterday's game winning 15 of the last 16 games with road wins over every conference opponent we had faced.

We got what we wanted yesterday. We benched Cardwell and made him a non factor and we had Mazara in foul trouble quickly. We beat them handily in offensive boards and overall rebounds and we didn't turn the ball over. Our defense let us down. You shouldn't lose home games where you get to 85 points, win the free throw battle and outrebound your opponent.

The strange thing is that last year I had a lot of confidence in Sears either converting the layup or getting to the line when he drove.

This year it's more often reminding me of when the offense was bogging down and Shackleford drove the rim for one easily blocked shot after another.

Why? Is it the defensive focus? Is he a step slower for some reason?
Is it spacing of the offense -- Estrada drove and dished a lot and you couldn't give Wrightsell an inch as a corner threat?

Not trying to pick on Sears who's obviously trying but it's just puzzling how his finishing at the rim went from such a strong point last season to such a low percentage desperation one this year.

It works during the game but at the end of the game refs tend to want to let them play instead of whistling.

I love sears but I'm tired of him playing for a foul call when the game is on the line and getting rejected by a big man. Run some offense and pass the ball. He wants to iso hero ball.
