I've decided. If Sexton comes back, this team will have heavier expectations than any Bama Bball team has had to withstand since, Lord knows when... possibly the year following the Elite Eight run?

The smart decision would certainly be to go to the NBA. But it is a personal decision and he could decide he wants to stay in college and play another year as he will never have another opportunity to do that.

Nah since the 2002 team that lost to IU in the first round. That team was LOADED but had a crappy offensive system.

He is obviously struggling with it, in reality he should have declared with about 10 minutes to go against Villanova. Generally speaking if you are a first round pick you should go, but the Bama fan in me would love to have another year of him in Crimson. He has made Bama Bball more entertaining than it has been in a long time.

Sexton talks draft decision process, benefits of returning (BamaOnLine)
quote:

Alabama freshman point guard Collin Sexton has yet to make his NBA Draft decision. Or at least make it public.

The Crimson Tide’s star freshman was in New York on Friday at the GEICO Nationals game between Oak Hill (Va.) Academy and University (Fla.) School, but Sexton said he was in town to watch his girlfriend play. She’s a member of the team from Westlake, Ga.

In a brief interview with ESPN2, Sexton was jokingly asked if he was visiting as a prospective pick of the New York Knicks, a team that will be choosing in the lottery of this summer’s NBA Draft. “Aw man, honestly whatever happens,” Sexton said.

The SEC Co-Freshman of the Year, however, once again brushed off questions about whether he will enter the 2018 draft or return to Alabama for his sophomore season. A projected lottery selection, it seems unlikely that Sexton will return to Tuscaloosa, Ala.

After Alabama’s second-round exit from the NCAA Tournament, Sexton was asked the same question. Instead of providing a definitive answer, he said he was going to celebrate the season with his teammates and focus on finishing with 4.0 grade-point average.

But in neither interview did he reveal his ultimate decision. Or rule out a possible return. “It’s big, because talking to my family, you just have to weigh your options,” Sexton told ESPN2 of the decision process. “The good, the bad, you just have to think and make the right decision. It’s kind of like recruiting -- best fit and stuff like that.”

Following the SEC Tournament and prior to the NCAA Tournament, ESPN projected Sexton to be the first college guard off the board in the NBA Draft, chosen with the eighth overall selection by the Cleveland Cavaliers -- one spot ahead of Oklahoma’s Trae Young.

Leading the Crimson Tide to its first NCAA Tournament win since 2006, Sexton led UA with 17 points against No. 1-seed Villanova to end his historic freshman campaign with a season-high of 632 points. That point total surpassed Michael Ansley (1988-89) for third on the Tide’s single-season scoring list. Should he somehow return, he would add to that total.

But what would be the benefits of passing on becoming a top-10 draft choice? “Learning more, becoming better and becoming an all-around player, whether that’s on offense or defense,” Sexton said. “And just like leading the team because freshman year, I had to come in and lead pretty fast. So, when you’re in your second year, you already know what’s going to happen.”

The early entry eligibility deadline is April 22, according to NBA.com, and players have until June 11 to withdraw their names from consideration. The 2018 draft is set for June 21.

His reasoning in interesting, but I'm not sure it's enough to overcome the allure of the NBA. It sounds like he recognizes that another year of college may better prepare him for immediate success as a pro, but at the same time there's nothing he's going to learn in college that he can't learn as a pro. He has no glaring weaknesses in his game that need a ton of work and he has an NBA body already in terms of size/strength. I think he declares relatively soon but doesn't hire an agent.

I don't think he has great point guard instincts. He definitely likes to drive to the basket, but when teams collapse in the paint and stop him, he doesn't usually make a good pass to a open shooter. Many times he will try to force his way to the basket trying to get fouled. He was just dealing with better college defenses and teams that scout you and adjust to you strengths and weaknesses. Its sort of the same thing that happened to Jalen Hurts. A team figures out how to slow you down, and then everyone copies it. Then you have to adjust.

Disagree , his ability to find the open man happened a lot...We Just didn't finish enough consistently. He ll avg 7 to 9 assists a night in the NBA.

what shooters?

I'd rather him drive as much as possible than give up to our "shooters"

Yeah, he got totally shut down to the tune of a tick under 20 ppg as a true freshman. And what open shooters would you have him pass to? Would you have felt better if he kept kicking out to Key, Ingram, and Petty only to watch them go a combined 6/22 from 3 every night? I swear some of you just look for any stupid thing to criticize. I bet you're one of the morons who kept parroting the "better without Sexton" nonsense.

I'd say that's actually a strength of his. He did that all the time especially towards earlier in the season. It's not his fault our guys sucked at hitting open shots.

Speaking on all of Bama's open shooters missing shots, my main and probably only real complaint about college basketball is the lack of shooting across all of CBB. It amazes me how many open 15-20 footers you see missed in most games. It gets brutal at times.

I agree that Sexton can improve his passing (hitting the inside hand at the numbers more often) but I don’t think that’s a sign of his instincts. Passing is correctable.

At the beginning of the season he was hell bent on drawing a foul at the cup. About two-thirds through he began lobbing to Hall more often. Then at the end he started pulling up for more jumpers. His game evolved quite well during the season as teams compensated to take away his strengths.

If Collin came back his assist numbers would go way up. Especially with Tevin Mack, he is almost automatic at corner 3's

Lol I'm not calling anyone automatic until they prove they can shoot at bama. Seems like most of them can shoot and then get worse

I basically made the same comment about his assists going up with better shooting and got downvoting. I agree with robot, some people like to nitpick so they'll have something to bitch about.

I agree he is a good passer, but I'd pump the brakes on 7-9 apg, that's lead the league territory

Only 2 guys have averaged 11+ APG in past 7 or so seasons, Rajon Rondo + James Harden. 7+ apg puts you top 10 every year in entire league, roughly top 5 PG

If Sexton finds success in the NBA, I imagine it would be scoring guard similar to Kemba Walker or pre injury Derrick Rose who are elite at getting into the lane

The league lead each of the last 5 years:

2018: Russell Westbrook (10.1), (Chris Paul with 8 is in 5th place)

2017: James Harden (11.2), (Ricky Rubio with 9.1 was in 5th place)

2016: Rajon Rondo (11.7), (Ricky Rubio with 8.6 was in 5th place)

2015: Chris Paul (10.2), (Rajon Rondo with 7.9 was in 5th place)

2014: Chris Paul (10.7), (Steph Curry with 8.5 was in 5th place)

I could see Sexton having something like 6-7.5 a game maybe. Ben Simmons this season is sitting at 8.1 in 4th place as a rookie and that's pretty high for a rookie.
