An email sent Monday to every corner of the University of Alabama campus had Nick Saban’s fingerprints all over it. The message from the school’s athletic department alerted students about their options for buying tickets, informing them of their eligibility for both full and split packages that included a select number of home games. There was also a section outlining the prices — $20 for an SEC matchup and $15 for one of those rent-a-win affairs.

Then, at the very end, was a note describing a new initiative called “Tide Loyalty Points.” “Through the Tide Loyalty Points program, students will earn points for attending home football games and for their support in the 4th quarter,” the email read. “Those points will contribute to students’ priority access to regular and postseason tickets.” The introduction of this new measure came a mere six months after Saban, the Crimson Tide’s hard-charging coach, used his bully pulpit at the Mal Moore Athletic Center in October to decry the attendance of students at Alabama’s 56-14 win over Louisiana-Lafayette, which kicked off at 11 a.m. and featured swaths of empty seats at Bryant-Denny Stadium in the sections populated by current undergrads and those seeking advanced degrees.

quote:

Most recently, the school brought back the controversial “Dixieland Delight,” which was played in the fourth quarter during the final four home games of the 2018 season as a way to discourage people from leaving early. Now comes the “Tide Loyalty Points,” which appears to be a joint response from Alabama athletics and the student government to address Saban’s concerns and incentivize committed attendance. “Look, our players work too hard and they deserve to have everything and people supporting them in every way and have tremendous spirit for what they’ve done," Saban said last fall. “And they might not be able to continue to do it and we’re going to work hard to continue that but there’s a part of it that other people need to support them, too. And there has to be a sprit that makes it special to play here because that’s what makes it special to be here. And it that’s not here, does it continue to be special to be here or not? That’s the question everybody has to ask and I’m asking it right now.”

Better match-ups would fix that problem

Yep. How about ditching a late November Chattanooga for a 9th SEC game?

How about swapping out the home opener against North Texas for , say, Texas?

No. An OOC FBS opponent will be fine.

We already have Texas scheduled.

So I’m unclear on how this is going to work exactly. Are they going to have to scan in again during the fourth quarter to verify that they are still there? Do they swipe out to leave?

You guys that bitch about the schedule kill me. lol. It's like you'd rather have a game against a football blueblood than win a championship.

Btw Saban has lobbied for a 9th SEC game. The rest of the conference balked at it.

Exactly. He has lobbied to get a 9th game, but it panned by the rest of the conference. We have played the same basic schedule for a very long time. In their early years, that stadium was always packed from beginning to end. The students just got used to winning and don’t feel like showing up for a OOC game that we are favored by 25+. I think that this is a step in the right direction, but I don’t know how they will be able to verify whether they leave or stay.

1) Saban has long been a proponent of going to 9 (or even 10) SEC games. Few others in the conference share his opinion, however.

2) Saban has long been a proponent of having a CFB-wide rule for P5 teams to play only P5 teams.

quote:

One big change Saban would make is no more cupcake games for Power 5 teams. Saban suggested a schedule of 10 conference games (currently eight in the SEC) and two Power 5 non-conference opponents. He would also drop the current minimum wins to get to a bowl game in favor of a seeding system similar to college basketball’s March Madness. “We should play all teams in the Power 5 conferences,” Saban said. “If we did that, then if we were going to have bowl games, we should do the bowl games just like we do in the NCAA basketball tournament — not by record but by some kind of power rating that gets you in a bowl game. If we did that, people would be a little less interested in maybe bowl games and more interested in expanding the playoff.”

From this article:

Simply put, Saban has long desired the changes fans want to see. However, he's getting paid to win Championships, and Alabama is not going to implement these changes until everyone does, as these changes would put us at a distinct disadvantage in getting to the post-season if only we played this type of schedule.

And so, you fans here can clamor on about wanting better opponents, but you shouldn't direct those comments at coach as if he's the one in the way.

He demonstrably isn't.

This ^^^ will help

Also, get rid of the student section in the upper deck of the south end zone and fill it with folks on the waiting list.

I fully understand that Saban wants a 9th SEC game for all.
But, he certainly could go out and have our AD schedule as tough opponent as possible.
Although, that is easier said than done with schedules made out so far in the future.
Further, it really isn't beneficial in today's scheduling to play any tougher teams OOC, due to the possibility of losses.
Do you not think that tOSU would have gotten into the CFP in '17 over Bama had they not played OU and lost, but instead played someone like Kent State and won?

Until it's a level playing field for everyone (which Saban is promoting), it will continue to be the same with shite for schedules.

Incentivize it all you want youre still asking students to chose a 40 point blowout with no beer, no other games, overpriced food, in 90 degree weather over watching all the games, with beer, with cheaper food, in comfortable conditions

That late season rent-a-win doesn't bother me so much. A good time to heal up the team and give the reserves some PT.
But one of those early sacrificial lambs could be done away with. And they don't have to be an OSU/OU level opponent. Something along the lines of NC State/Iowa State/Colorado would be a matchup we would all rather watch than Directional Tech.

Counter-argument, the only reason Ohio State got in the 2016 playoffs was because they went into Norman and won

I watch sports to be entertained. Nothing is entertaining about playing Mercer. If you don't want to play better teams, ok, but don't bitch when my seats are empty or if I leave at halftime.

I'm clearly in the minority but I truly enjoy these types of games. First, they're less stressful because there's essentially a 0% chance we'll lose. But second, I absolutely love seeing our depth get playing time, and that usually occurs in these types of games. There are so many guys on the roster that you don't get to see play on a regular basis, so it's pretty cool to see them out on the field doing their thing.

Reason #1 for not watching.
