I also love that Oats is up watching film and firing off texts to those guys well after midnight sometimes.
LOL I know, right? Great shite.

It's just a question of figuring out how to bring it out of some guys and then maximize it
I wish I could figure that out with my daughter. She is really good at tennis and wants to win, but doesn't want to win at the expense of someone losing. She apologizes to the opponent when she hits a really good shot.

Mine is only 6 and turns everything into a competition. If anything I'm going to need to teach him to tone it down and learn how to lose gracefully. Because right now he's destined to go to LSU. Whenever I beat him at Mario Kart he immediately accuses me of cheating.

quote:Bingo! Coach Oats seems to be a master at it. You're also right about the type of player needed to make it work.
The whole psychology of creating those games and incentivizing behavior based on points systems and not based on negative reinforcement ("we don't do this", "don't take that shot", "don't give up layups") is just genius.

I found it interesting/encouraging when he added in that nugget about backing off a guy because he didn't think his mindset fit the culture here even though he was a highly ranked kid.
That shite matters. A lot.
Yeah there's a difference between loving to win and hating to lose. Oats wants guys who hate to lose. Those are the kind of players who are going to dive after a loose ball or take a charge when they're winning by 20 points.

I hate doing the football comparison thing because it makes me feel FOG like icky, but Saban routinely talks about how his driving force is that losing makes him sick. He can't deal with it.
Oats has shown a whole lot of similarities to that. He just can't deal with it, it makes him ill.

Definitely makes me think of Cardet and if that had anything to do with us backing off of him (not saying that it did, but makes me wonder).

His intellect is apparent in literally every aspect of coaching. Schematics, player psychology, program structure, everything. We are so lucky to have him

You'll never be a consistent winner until you hate to lose. It's always been my mindset and what I try to emphasize with my guys.
It's not just with basketball either. I try to get across to them the importance of having that same attitude with everything they do-school, personal discipline, relationships, whatever.
The best teams I've had always have leaders with that mindset. Another key is that your best players MUST be the hardest workers on the team. They don't always have to be vocal leaders, but they must be the hardest workers or you won't succeed.

Are the ladies a lock for the tourney?
Posted on 3/2/21 at 1:09 pm to Alum69
Credible enough to be a part of bracketmatrix, but i'd take it with a grain of salt for now. Only counting the brackets that were updated today, we are a one seed in four of the brackets that bracketmatrix uses and a three seed in two of them. The other 89 brackets have us as a two seed with 1.98 being our average seed overall.

My 21 year old nearly blew a gasket losing at Catan.

Lock is a strong word, but I think they are. I'm not going to pretend to know who the best bracketologists are for NCAAW, but according to ESPN they are a projected as a 7 seed as of about five hours ago.
