We're not going to have a JD Davison every year, though (and we'll only have him for 1). If your system needs a lottery pick point guard to function then your system isn't working.

SOG took the words out of my mouth and that was the main reservation I had about the Oats hiring. Avery had the major weakness in that same department. A successful coach at Bama will need to discover gems and not hedge all their bets on five star talent.

Very true, but I don't recall Oats having that issue at Buffalo. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Darius Miles, Jusaun Holt, Langston Wilson, hopefully Wes Cardet...
Herb and Shack should probably be considered gems too, even though they are from the prior staff technically.
The current roster (and the signed class coming in next year) has a mix of some legit blue chip talent and some "gems".
Basketball IQ is the biggest problem right now. We have plenty of talent and we have good enough talent to run our system, but our guys are lacking in the execution of the system because oftentimes they make a poor decision when forced to make one.
And we aren't hitting enough of the good shots that the system is presenting either, which should ultimately regress to the mean and be a benefit to us eventually.

No he didn't, which is why I'm still not losing my mind over it yet. However, this season will definitely be one to watch and see what adjustments are made to make up for not having a slash and kick guy running the point.

BB, you think Hall could shoot 3s? That is what he would be doing. Standing around the 3 point line. Oats said a few days ago, that Bruner was still learning how to get rebounds in this system. I guess for some reason he cant figure out how to rebound from the 3 point line Maybe Oats needs to explain it to him, and me because I dont understand it. Oats likes to talk about how the nba is playing our style of bball. Those guys in the nba are some of the most elite athletes in the world. We dont even have a legitimate second string point guard. Those nba players can take it to the rim and will tear your head off if you get in the way. We dont have those type of players and wont ever have but an occasional player that can do anything he wants to with the bball. I personally dont think any of our recent point guards were very good at driving and kicking it out to someone else. The could drive and score or get fouled, but not kick it out. But its still early in the season. IMO, he needs to figure out how to use Bruner. Quit trying to force a square peg into a round hole. If we intend to keep up this 3 point, dribble drive offense, then they need to spend a lot of time on ball handling in the off season, not just shooting 3s.

Florida men's basketball player Keyontae Johnson is in a medically induced coma after collapsing during a game over the weekend, his grandfather, Larry DeJarnett, told USA TODAY Sports on Monday.
DeJarnett said in a phone interview that his grandson was transported to Gainesville, Florida on Monday after receiving his initial treatment in Tallahassee, where he collapsed early in Saturday's game between the Gators and Florida State.

Let's see them produce first. I always hold John Belein and Bo Ryan as the best at finding gems.

Oh man, really hope things improve.

Cecil just tweeted that the Houston game is very doubtful and probably won't be played due to Covid. Bama is looking at bringing in Western Kentucky as a replacement. I'm not crazy at giving Rick Stansbury a shot at another Bama pelt for his trophy case. They are good enough to be a dangerous mid-major.
ETA: Follow-up tweet; it's a done deal. Bama vs WKU Saturday.

We could’ve used a victory over Houston. WKU ain’t bad but won’t carry as much weight as a win over Houston would

On the flip side, beating Western Kentucky is probably much more attainable
Also, fvck Stansfield

That kind of fricking sucks. Houston be a big RPI boost.

And this is why I get sucked in every year - because I believe in the hype surrounding the new guys. Hopefully they will be as advertised assuming we get Cardet- If we don't I hope he is a bust.

This is something we can all agree on. If we lose to that motherfricker I'm just done.

Oats better pony up on his Alabama basketball history and understand how important this one is.
Losing to Stansfield ain't an option.

quote:He was a fine, fine man. Back then, kids came to Tuscaloosa to play, and many had little more than the clothes on their backs. He'd take money out of his pocket and give it to them if they needed shoes, a coat, or any other essential. He and his family were close friends with my family and my mother loved him to death! I remember him fondly!
As an aside my father played for Coach Crisp in the late 30’s

Players who can finish at the rim will thrive in this offense.
