I feel like our biggest issue is what we've all noted and Oats said publicly - we don't have guys who can get into the lane and make good decisions once the defense breaks down. If you can't do that this offense is just a bunch of guys running out of control into the lane and either shooting or pulling it out and starting the process over. The thing doesn't work unless you understand and can read when the defense is forced to collapse and then take advantage of it. And on top of that, we struggle more with the breaking down of the defense part than we did last year with Kira. However; I'd argue that JQ, Shack and Herb have done a decent job of beating guys off the dribble. The problem has been what they do after that.

Also - we're 240th nationally in 3 PT % (29.1%). Part of that is the 3s we are taking haven't consistently been as good, but part of it is we just aren't making shots. Theoretically that will return to the mean, but it'd be nice if that started sooner than later. We're 240th in 3P% and 219th in Effective FG%. It's hard to win games like that.

Here are the major teams worse than us in Effective FG%

220. Memphis (46.9%) (2-3) (#52 in offensive rebound rate) (57th in Effective FG D)
244. Houston (45.3%) (#7 in offensive rebound rate) (20th in Effective FG D)
248. Butler (44.7%) (played 1 game)
262. Washington (43.7%) (1-4) (62nd in Effective FG D)
280. Washington State (41.9%) (22nd in Effective FG D)
306. Tennessee (37.9%) (24th in Effective FG D) (5th in Defensive Efficiency)

We are 125th in Effective FG% defense and 152nd in Offensive Rebound Rate.

TL/DR - We don't shoot well, we don't offense rebound well and our defense is good but not great. That's a terrible arse combination.

Houston is going to whip our arse, plain and simple, unless we start making some 3's consistently.

To clarify my previous point, I love Herb and everything he brings to the table. But he's an offensive liability. If your other 4 players on the floor are filling it up, no big deal, Herb can do his thing, and he's a positive force. But if the other guys are not pulling the offensive load, then Herb just magnifies the problem by 1/5. I'm tired of hearing Oats try to talk Reese into contributing. Everyone has seen enough of him to know that he's not going to do anything that is productive worth a damn. SIT HIM NOW! Petty just needs to get hot and stay hot. We need his production right now and he's not moving himself up any mock drafts currently.

Yeah if Herb Jones is the leading scorer, it’s not going to be a good outcome.

So what’s the feeling on the Furman game? First home game in a while and beat them by 8 last year. I see they are 5-1 but haven’t played anybody decent except Cincinnati who they lost to by 5.

If we don’t make some 3s, we’ll suffer a bad loss.

If we play like we did in the games after Stanford we'll probably win, but it might not be comfortable. I think we'll get easier looks and probably make a few more shots. This team defends pretty well, so I think we are less susceptible to losing to mid-majors than in the past.

I think our problem is and will be athletic teams that can guard us.

Yeah, we're easy to scout and prepare for if a team plays solid defense and doesn't face big athletic mismatches.

We're simply not forcing defenses to do all that much defending right now.

A coach with decent enough on the ball defenders can gamble that any dribble penetration just needs one help defender and 75% of the time the driver will either put up a low percentage off balance shot or turn it over trying the obvious pass your defense has covered.

Our prospects really depend on whether our guards can begin to drive under control with more recognition of what the defense will do and make passes that get the defense scrambling and out of their comfort zone.

I'm not even concerned about the poor shooting from behind the arc so far. If you rewind and watch most of out 3 pt shots (after the immediate frustration passes) you'll see that 4 out of 5 shots against Stanford and Clemson were very difficult, rushed looks like Shack firing it up without time to square his shoulders, Petty having to take a dribble and shoot moving horizontally etc etc)

Our percentage on good open looks has actually been ok in the bigger games. We just are not getting many of those at all!

I completely agree with the sentiment that I'm less interested in hearing Oats' talk to the fans right now and more interesting in seeing the results of getting our offense to create open shots.

I do feel confident that Petty, Shack, JQ et al will continue to shoot the 3 very well as soon as the majority of their looks don't resemble end of the shot clock looks.

We're being run off the 3-point line by the more aggressive defensive teams. For a team that's supposed to be able to run and gun, we're neither very quick nor fast in space....that ain't good.

Players who can finish at the rim will thrive in this offense. Sexton comes to mind. Obasohan perhaps. Tony Mitchell maybe. Anyone else? Do we honestly have a player who has shown that ability, on a consistent basis, to this point? Thanks, I'll hang up an listen.

Would have LOVED to see Hall in this offense. The dude would have been the perfect 5 for this offense. I’d also add Releford to your list. That dude wasn’t the fastest, but he finished everything.

As far as the guy on this team that has the potential to be that guy, it’s Quinerly. He’s been a solid finisher, but the problem is he doesn’t stay in attack mode like he should. When Quinerly drives, I feel good about the outcome. When he dribbles up a fancy turnover outside of the arc, he makes me want to pull my hair out.

I also think that as Herb gets more comfortable being relied on as a scoring option, he’ll shine a bit more as well. Really impressed with the amount of progress he has made in his offensive game. I’m just disappointed with practically every other player’s offensive game this year. If you would have told me before the season that Herb would be averaging 13 PPG, shoot 38% from 3 and 83% from the FT line, I would have considered a Final Four a realistic outcome. Now I’m not sure if we have a (legit) NCAAT team. That’s how disappointing the rest of the team has been.

JD Davison will thrive in this attack. I just hope we can put more pieces around him. Right now, next year looks like JD and Shack and Primo. Maybe we land Bediako and we'll have an inside presence. Dunno. Real disappointed in what I've seen so far this season. We need a guard that can penetrate and finish or dish to the open man, and a big man that can clean shite up inside offensively, not just protect the rim. Bruner has been all he was advertised to be on the defensive end. He's been a real good addition there. On the offensive glass, he's a pussy.
