I know Nate was aware of the market before the portal opened, it didnt catch him by surprise. I honestly think Oats is looking at this completely different than we are. Top players in the portal, we tend to see the same 5-10 schools listed for them, but rarely is Alabama in that discussion. I think we were involved with only 2 of the top 15 transfers this cycle. 3 if you count Sherrell.

it cant be that we swing and miss on literally everyone, we have to be following a different evaluation measurement than the fans perceive.

Florida and Tennessee will be very good next year.

Alabama talked to some of the players in the portal and moved on due to NIL budget or wasn't a right fit.

Because the only guard we have is a former walk-on son of the assistant coach?

Nate Oats just did the golf tournament and did an intervals didn’t seem the least bit stressed about the roster. In fact, he said he thinks we got a lot better and “we have a plan in place if we get Amari and Aden back, or just one, or neither”

I trust him.

I don’t think the plan without both is going to be great

Arkansas appears to be no joke either. Landing (4) 5 Star freshman, and transfer portal additions of Cooper Bowser and Wilkinson.

We usually save the negative thoughts for about midseason but I appreciate your level of commitment

I just think we need one not both back to really be on the level we’ve been sustaining. If both are back, I think we could be quite good. Maybe better than this past season.

I know. I’m just messing with you.

Fwiw I fully believe we’re planning to have both back. Aden is like 95% and Amari like 75%. I think Amari might be my personal favorite player since Brandon Miller so I feel very torn. I want him back on our team but he’s such a good kid that I feel bad “cheering against” his draft stock. So I’m just letting it play out and I’ll be happy either way.

If these numbers are anywhere close to correct, I don’t see how it’s sustainable

The thing is that this is all literally nothing more than a vanity project for wealthy boosters. People really miss sight of that. There is no ROI on this spending for them the way there is for the owner of a pro sports franchise who pockets the revenue. Indiana makes money, not Mark Cuban. Texas Tech makes money, not Cody Campbell. The market is not going to correct itself. It's a dick swinging contest between billionaires who can light $50 million on fire and not experience any change in their standard of living.

In all seriousness…the end game for this is all the non profit sports are going to go away. Boosters will get tired of spending because rich people don’t get rich by throwing money away. But there’s no putting the cork back in this bottle fully so ultimately sports that bleed money are going to go away or be scaled WAYYYY back which might not be the worst thing in the world. I like all of our teams to be great but realistically if a program is losing multi millions of dollars then it probably should find a way to not do that.

I mean we are in trouble if $20M-$30M rosters become the norm in basketball. We struggle to get that much $$ for our football roster.

This is where Byrne needs to get creative with his fundraising

I’m not entirely sure what that looks like. I’m totally opposed to us putting ads on jerseys and it will kill almost all of what I have left for college sports if/when that day comes.

I do think YeaAlabama has some untapped potential because I feel like it’s kind of mostly just EXISTED with a few random events sprinkled in(which are very good but there’s a lot of meat on the bone with other things they could do)

We’re in an interesting spot. We are the most followed athletics department in all of college sports in all social media. We don’t have multi billionaire donors but we do have more interest than any other team.

I do feel like Byrne will be one of the very last AD’s to give in to the inevitability that most of these sports will have to go to club or intramural level. He loves his Olympic sports. I think we’ll be late to that party

Nobody wants to put ads on jerseys or field but you have to do it or you will get left behind. Our football program has been the most popular collegiate sports program the last 25 years….Somebody will pay us a shite ton of money for their logo on BDS and our jerseys.

Jersey ads are such a stupid thing. I will actively not buy any product that buys a jersey ad. It’s so dumb. Spend 5-8 million dollars and hope someone will be like “wow I never considered FedEx but now that it’s in a jersey I guess I will!”

I hate everything.
