i understand the purpose of the thread. when things break down its Milroe for sure otherwise we get Kick six type game

Milroe is still very erratic so his range in performance and consistency is all over the place

AJ was more consistent with not as high a ceiling

An accurate Milroe definitely beats AJ

But this discussion is mute until Milroe gets 2 rings to himself

Milroe. I don't think we are playing for a title this year without his legs.

AJ in his next year, 2012, would be a better comparison.

Agreed. Though Milroe can still make street ball mistakes and AJ's football IQ was superior [at this point in their development], the game continues to slow for Jalen and I'm excited with what he's accomplished and his future.

McCarron. He’s a 4000+ yard passer in the modern game.

There's no way redshirt sophomore AJ McCarron would throw for 4,000 yards in this offense. Less yardage on almost 70 more attempts comparing the two seasons. Fifth-year senior AJ McCarron? Maybe so.

At this point in the season Milroe is the choice. AJ had yet to take over a game like he would against LSU for the title. Everyone saying McCarron is thinking of 2012 and 2013 McCarron and not 2011 McCarron.

AJ. I think you put him with an OC that can utilize his strengths as a passer we move the ball just as effectively in our present day if not moreso.

Multiple games that we almost lost would have been easy wins with AJ under center.

I think people forget how LITTLE was required of McCarron in 2011. He wasn't close to the same guy that year as he was by the end of 2012 or in 2013.

Give me Milroe. AJ was a game manager and had an all world defense. Subpar deep ball and no athleticism. Milroe is learning but has a much higher ceiling than Mccarron. Both are great guys though.

Half of McCcarron's 16 TDs were against Kent State, Ga Southern, and Vandy.

He also only got sacked 17 times in 13 games whereas Milroe has been sacked 42 times in 13 games. Yes, some of those are on him, but he also got out of a lot of those sacks.

Yep. 2011 AJ was basically just JPW or McElroy with a better arm. Total game manager. 1/9 came completely out of nowhere in large part because it was the first time AJ made a bunch of true coverage beating throws that season. If Milroe makes the kind of jump McCarron did between 2011-2012 he's going to run away with the Heisman next season.

AJ had that good game because our coaches figured out that we had a tight end that no one could cover after the first lsu game. I am constantly amazed that Saban doesnt get on to Milroe for going deep so often. He kicked AJ's but for that, and not taking what was there. Times have changed.

Two very different types of QB! Skill sets and mental approach very much unlike each other.

I’ve actually heard Saban over the years say the offense needs to take more shots downfield at various times.

So we can’t discuss this for at least 13 months

I’m not a Milroe fanboi trying to push his first season as the starter over AJs legacy.
I just enjoy conversation and a bit of debate with those smarter or more informed than me.

JM and AJ certainly had contrasting goals, styles and permissions in their rookie years. I’m not arguing one’s better than the other.

I agree that would be a good discussion. Especially since AJ had earned CNS trust and was the undisputed offensive leader (along with BarrettJones).

WhenAJ tapped Jones arse in the NC versus Notre Dame, that was an example of AJs competitive spirit. Classic moment for me as a fan to appreciate.

I don’t disagree with you at all. But 2011 AJ wasn’t a risk taker (and reward earner) he became in 12 and 13. So not sure if he would have 4000 yards, but probably capable of it.

Smelly was so athletic for that position. The GaTech transfer was too.

I’m definitely one of those guys who’ve wondered WTH did our TEs go in the offense after that, until OJ came along. And I almost forgot about OJ until Clemson ??

2011 AJ wasn’t projecting to be one of the best 60-70 QBs in the world yet.

Since his 2011 and JMs 2023 accomplishments are so close, it gives me high hopes for JM.
