Yes, last night was embarrassing.

Yes, we looked horrendous.

Yes, I might be full of shite.

But, let's look at this way:

We held Missouri to 19 points in the opener and if we had left Mac and Najee in they probably wouldn't have scored 10. They put 45 points on LSU yesterday.

We held A&M to 24 points last week and gifted them a TD as a result of Mac's INT. They pummeled Florida yesterday to the tune of 41 points.

Sure we gave up a lot of yards to both of them, but for the most part they were playing catch-up and we were playing soft.

Maybe, just maybe, we're overreacting a little regarding last night's performance.

We wouldn't keep Missouri to as low of points again.

Maybe not, but we did do it so they are capable of playing decent defensively.

Last night was a terrible sign of things to come. Our defense has too much talent to look the way that they did. More than that, it was total lack of leadership, both from coaches and players, that made last night even more frustrating. The continued lack of covering the wheel route of out of the backfield is surreal. Also, our defensive line not attacking. They just stand there catching blocks. The team better straighten up fast or Georgia will run us out of Bryant Denny.

I think Bama’s defenses is built more for an offense like Georgia than Ole Miss

Our defense isn't built for any offense right now. Alabama will get run all over if we don't get our act together. Georgia on the other hand looks like they are peaking at the right time.

As a Georgia fan, I’m still concerned about a couple things

- Run Blocking has been below average
- Stetson had a couple ill-advised throws in the 2nd quarter
- Despite our great defense, our DBs have given up 3 long TD passes this year.
- We have fumbled the ball 6 times this year. Luckily we’ve gotten it back 4/6 times but ball security seems to be an issue.

Part of it is our players cant make the defensive calls quick enough when we play the fast ball teams. One time our middle linebacker was facing backwards trying to communicate with the d backs while Ole Miss was snapping the ball. Pruitt told Saban that the defense was to complicated to make the calls against the fast paced offenses. We simplified terminology but its not enough. One writer said that our outside linebacker was constantly telling Moses he was in the wrong place, and he is making the calls. What I dont understand is why we dont use a timeout sometimes when its obvious that we are not lined up and the other team is about to snap the ball. Or we have a terrible matchup. We give up huge plays to save a time out. But, we would have stopped Ole Miss several times if we could make a tackle.

For reference, here's the box score the vaunted 2016 defense put up against Ole Miss in Oxford that season:

ESPN

We gave up 522 total yards and won 48-43. Thank God they fumbled twice.

I'd definitely rather have all of those than more of Pete Golding's interpretation of Cover 0.

I would have felt better if it had been a few late scores by OM to cut it to 15pts and given up 48 but that game was in doubt the whole game . Hopefully we overlooked them but the mistakes were technique AND effort . That is what worries me. At least we can fuss about it after a win though

That 16 defense gave up 31 points and a ton of yards to Arkansas too.

A hot QB has always lit up Bama's defense.

Difference between that the performance in that game and this is still quite astounding. The Smart defenses had some not good defensive performances as well. But in all these games, they still got stops. They still played with intensity and had big plays (2 TDs in that Ole Miss game) like sacks, turnovers, and TDs. This team looks completely lost/lazy and barely made any good plays at all last night. They didn’t have a SINGLE drive that was impressive.

We’ve also seen this defense for the last 2 seasons now. It’s very possible the defense is NOT actually as bad as they looked last night, but the point is they should be a hell of a lot better.

I'm sure I'll get DVed to Bolivian for pointing this again, but this is what you get when you sell your soul at the altar of Bright Shiny Offensive Things. It is no coincidence that since a certain Pacific islander showed up, our defense has turned into a Big12 outfit.
Iron sharpens iron. You don't become a physically imposing offense with your QB in the shotgun inside the 5 yard line or your 320lb OLinemen in a 2-point stance with their weight on their heels. Not does your defense become a savage, intimidating unit by facing bubble screens in practice every day. Can anyone honestly say our defenses have scared anyone since we morphed into Oklahoma Crimson Tide? There's not a single DLineman or LBer an opposing team has to account for or scheme against. The DL looks like a bunch of JAGs. Moses is a combine LBer. And my supposition is that these highly rated recruits have been softened to the point of ineffectiveness by not being physically pushed at all. We can call for Holding's head as loud as we want because that's easy (and I think he should go). But I don't see any foxhole guys on our D. Does anyone think if Cornelius Bennett, DT or Jonathan Allen would give a shite on 3rd and long who the DC is?
We have become what we used to ridicule.

Having complained about this for two days, I fully expect us to play better next week

I think last night was just one of those games, you know?

We also had a year when a vaunted defense had to be bailed out by us out scoring Auburn. It happens sometimes. A lot of football is confidence and the inertia of a particular game. OM got us reeling and we had a real hard time getting our heads on.

We played confused and scared because we were. We have talent, but also still have some youth.

Malachi Moore was running away from the play on one touchdown run.

I think you will see next weeks game look like ole miss's last three snaps. D Linemen coming hard and heavy. I expect Charlie Strong will have done input in disguising pressure. Hopefully that leads to disguising the coverage a little as well.

You also HAVE to give credit to Lane Kiffen for their teams offensive game plan. I honestly think he is one of the top 5 offensive minds in college football and he obviously spent the entire year planning for this game.
