The NFL made the announcement they're suspending Texans LB Azeez Al-Shaair for his hit on Trevor Lawrence...
quote:

"During your game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on December 1, with 4:20 remaining in the second quarter, you were involved in a play that the League considers unacceptable and a serious violation of the playing rules. Video shows you striking the head/neck area of Jaguars' quarterback Trevor Lawrence after he clearly goes down in a feet-first slide... You led with your forearm and helmet and delivered a forceful blow to the head/neck area of your opponent when you had time and space to avoid such contact.

"After the illegal hit, you proceeded to engage in a brawl, which you escalated when you pulled an opponent down to the ground by his facemask. After the referee announced that you were disqualified for the hit and your unsportsmanlike acts, you removed your helmet and reengaged with your opponent while walking down and across the field, which started another physical confrontation near the end zone.

"Your lack of sportsmanship and respect for the game of football and all those who play, coach, and enjoy watching it, is troubling and does not reflect the core values of the NFL… Your continued disregard for NFL playing rules puts the health and safety of both you and your opponents in jeopardy and will not be tolerated."
Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans was not having it...

Seemed like it should've been a penalty but way overblown. It's football, hits like that are un preventable

You can blame Mahomes (and others) for this... they do that fake slide nonsense and defenders do not have time to try and decipher if the qb is going to go down or try for a few extra yards. If the DB lets up, the QB goes right by them. Lawrence starts to lower his butt and then takes 2 or 3 more strides before he goes down.

Good grief Demeco, that hit was dirty as hell. Trying to defend it is just going to make it more of a story. The highlight reel of dirty hits is now going to be everywhere.

Dirty player. Woke coach. The NFL needs to dissolve.

This hit with the forearm and head going towards the neck/head of the qb J’s wrong. However with guys like Trevor and cam you never know if they’re gonna fake slide or slide and I say hit them bitches. Just not in the head.

The defender had already lowered his stance and committed to stopping the run when "girlie man" started his slide.

Simple solution - get rid of the slide rule. The league did just fine without the rule for a hundred years. It's tackle football. If you don't want to be controversially hit, get rid of the ball or take a dive like players use to.
user avatar
The league has a vested interest in protecting their qb’s. Unlike years past where physically hurting qb’s was encouraged, the league realized that it benefited everyone to not prematurely shorten the careers qb’s due to injury. For example, how much do you think the league benefited financially from Brady playing into his 40’s versus retiring mid 30’s as a broken shell of himself?

He’s correct. If you want to slide and not take a hit, then you better slide early and not get the extra 2 yards for the first down! Which is what he did.

Except Al-Shaair did not launch into the tackle until after Lawrence was already into the slide. Lawrence starts his slide at the 46 and Al-Shaair was at the 42. Lawrence got hit at the 44. Starting a slide 4 yards from the defender is pretty early.

Noooo... Tbag lowers his butt and starts to slow down at around the 50. He then takes 2 or 3 more strides before putting his butt on the ground. He clearly went for the extra yards. If he had given himself up at the 50 he would have been down by the 48 and Al-Shaair could have launched all he wanted to from the 42 and never gotten to him. Like I said before, you can blame Mahomes and his fake slide for this...
