SEC commissioner Greg Sankey has some concerns about the possibility of expanding the College Football Playoff to 24 teams.

While discussing the idea, Sankey pointed to several issues that would need to be worked through, including the financial side of expansion, the strain of playing additional games in December, and what it could mean for conference championship games.

Sankey also believes the current playoff selection process is already affecting how teams approach their non-conference scheduling Per Brett McMurphy:
quote:

"Our concerns relate to how you manage the economics. Is there value? I don’t think people understand the difficulty of going week to week to week to week in December. … We’ve looked at it & said CFP selection decisions are negatively impacting regular-season scheduling, particularly big non-conference games. That needs to be addressed first & also the economics, what we do with conference championship games, where the games fit & understanding the impact"
The comments come as discussions continue about potentially expanding the College Football Playoff beyond its current format.

Cancel the championship game. Any lost revenue will more than be made up during the playoffs.

Go to a 10 game regular season. Do away with conference championship games and then you can have a 24 team playoff but I agree, we can’t have a 24 team playoff with the current regular season scheduling format.

A nine game SEC schedule is insane. He needs to be replaced and a new location for the SEC office is an absolute must.

CFB is a money train now. Too many people have invested into its future and want returns. And sitting idle doesn’t produce returns. Gone are the good ole days, money F’d this sport up.

Don’t care much for sanity, but he is right. Don’t move to 24 team playoff. College ball is already going wrong way, this just adds to it

It’s just a bad idea. Even Sankey knows it.

It's a terriffic idea. There are 130+ teams in the fbs. The bowl games have become useless with opt outs and low attendance. Now instead of 15 teams hopeful on Nov 1, there will be 40 teams. Now the next steps are eliminate conference championship games and the playoff committee except on the back end. Top 4 teams in each conference goes to the playoffs and then have 6 at large teams, which the committee could select. 3rd grade math!

He can't even count past five.

What would he know about 24?

24 teams is sheer stupidity. There aren’t 12 championship caliber teams at the end of the year, let alone 24.

Yes, 16 MAX. It’s still too many but 24 is a joke.

I do have to agree with him here, unfortunately.

Skanky Sanky is probably just mad that a 24-team playoff would mean that LSU would get in most years.

Yeah no shite. Never worried about preserving the spirit of the game. Just milk the cow until its dead

I'm glad he is raising concerns. It's a stupid idea and I don't like Sankey but he is making points. But he should add player safety to it as well. This will really put a stake in the other bowl games, which are meaningless now.
