LSU head coach Lane Kiffin spoke with reporters on Monday and was asked about linebacker Whit Weeks, who had surgery on his foot earlier in the day after suffereing a broken fibula in the Texas A&M.

Kiffin didn't have a timeline for his return and said he didn't know if he would return this year:

“I don’t know exactly; I just know he’ll be out a while," Kiffin said.

"That’s a tough one, not just because, obviously, of the impact to the team. I mean, look at last year. Look at the points per game when he played versus when he didn’t last year."

“And It’s not just because of the player that he is. It’s the mentality and what he brings around him and how he is."

"That’s really probably why I was in the mood that I was in after the game, just knowing the impact and feeling horrible for him after he came back to have this great year, to get LSU fixed, to get the defense fixed.

"And then here it is, you know, right in the middle of being fixed and playing great, and this happens in, again, a freak injury of your own player rolling into you. I don’t know that.”

Following his response, Kiffin was quickly asked if Week will return this year.

“I don’t know that.”

It was previously reported that Weeks would be out for 4-6 weeks, which could possibly put his return in November, when LSU will face Alabama and Texas, along with Tennessee and Arkansas.

In the meantime, linebacker Davhon Keys will have to hold it down while Weeks is out.

Great Tiger and a certainly a tough loss.

Some things in life are just not fair. This certainly falls in that category. Same with all of the young men who are injured. Just very sad.

The two starters that will be playing can do an excellent job. Both are extremely capable so there is no reason to panic over the LB position.
That said, Weeks will certainly be missed on the field. But you can bet that he will be inspiring his team on the sidelines every game for the rest of the season weather he plays again or not

Why the DV? No, really........explain yourself!

Not sure of the injury/surgery he has but I'd say he's out the rest of the year. Best case is hes back in December and we can make a run in the post season.

Not sure of his injury and yet you give a medical diagnosis and a timeline. That’s brilliant.

No chance that he could be back in 4 weeks. Would love to know who gave that time frame.

Since nobody on here including me and you know how bad the injury is I’m just going to remain optimistic.

Bama would be the absolute best timeline with if we make the playoff being a more realistic timeframe.

Here’s something to think about: broke my fibula in my late 40s. One clean break, one partial, and one small spiral. Was walking without a boot a month later, jogging 6-7 weeks later.

Whit is a young, strong athlete with access to the best medical care. Hoping he’s back sooner than later.

Under a five for five I don’t think anybody is eligible if they have played five years or are older than 24. I may be wrong, but this is how the rule has been interpreted.

If you wanna hint of what he will do, ask him if he plans on entering the draft this year.

4 weeks before you can walk on a fixed fibula. 6 weeks before you can run on it. If he is entering the draft, I doubt if anyone would recommend a return this season.

I just hope he doesn't throw in the towel on his LSU career and head to the NFL.

He’s not wired that way.

Plus, presumably he’s being paid well by LSU. Not like it used to be when the nfl was the only way to make money.
user avatar

I wouldn't doubt that he's thinking of giving some of his money back...since he ain't earning it now. But, of course his agent would have none of that.

I have confidence in Keys against the run but he was bad in coverage last year. I think Ty Singleton is the more complete LB

Tough loss. Keep your head up young man. At the end of the day you’ll be an instant multimillionaire. Things could be worse.

Just hope that Whit can graduate with a meaningful degree…. One that can make money for him all his life.

I expect that Whit will have a long career in Football (if that is what he wants); as a player, coach, broadcaster or within business management of sports organizations. He has a tremendous gift and presence and there will be a clamoring for his services.

If he broke his fibula why would he have surgery on his foot….that bone is not in the foot…

The fibula is one of the bones that form the ankle

I felt like play improved when he went out but don’t get me wrong I love Whit.
