Several ESPN writers recently teamed up to rank the Top 10 "best coaches in college football for 2025," leaving LSU coach Brian Kelly out of the group.

After unveiling the Top 10, Andrea Adelson and Adam Rittenberg wrote about Kelly being left out:
quote:

I had Brian Kelly in my top 10, and I see he was close to making it. The bottom line for me is he is a consistent winner, no matter where he has coached. While I understand he has not won the way people expect at LSU, it is hard to argue against a .728 career win percentage in 21 years as an FBS coach, including a 113-40 record at Notre Dame. He left the Irish as the winningest coach in school history. As for LSU, I know people see him as underperforming there. But he has won 29 games in three years, produced a Heisman Trophy winner and has a team that should be a CFP contender this year. -- Adelson

I'm with AA on BK. People need to separate how they feel about an individual from what that coach has accomplished. Kelly brought incredible stability to a Notre Dame program that talked about winning national titles but honestly wasn't set up that well to compete for them. He needs to deliver at LSU this fall, but he's clearly a top-10 coach in the sport. Army's Jeff Monken certainly deserves some consideration after the work he has done at a program that was rarely beating Navy and had only one winning season between 1997 and 2013. I would love to see what Monken could do at a Power 4 program with more resources and a wider recruiting base. -- Rittenberg
Here's the Top 10:

1. Kirby Smart, Georgia
2. Ryan Day, Ohio State
3. Dabo Swinney, Clemson
4. Marcus Freeman, Notre Dame
5. Steve Sarkisian, Texas
6. Dan Lanning, Oregon
7. Kalen DeBoer, Alabama
8. James Franklin, Penn State
9. Kyle Whittingham, Utah
10. Matt Campbell, Iowa State

Also receiving votes: Brian Kelly, LSU, 13; Bill Belichick, North Carolina, 10; Curt Cignetti, Indiana, 10; Lance Leipold, Kansas,10; Jeff Monken, Army, 8; Jeff Brohm, Louisville, 6; Kenny Dillingham, Arizona State, 5; Lane Kiffin, Ole Miss, 3; Deion Sanders, Colorado, 3; Josh Heupel, Tennessee, 3; Rhett Lashlee, SMU, 3; Chris Klieman, Kansas State, 1; Kirk Ferentz, Iowa, 1

He should not be listed as he has not proved he is a top 10 coach at LSU. Even the guy that replaced him at ND was in the National Championship game. He is only an average SEC coach at best.

With a roster of good transfers & recruits to me if they can beat Clemson this team will be in the mode of the ‘03, ‘07 & ‘11 teams. Not including the ‘19 team because that was a once in a generation team. If he loses that game it’ll be a struggle to win 9

LSU hired Kelly to win at LsU don’t care about ND! At LSU he’s been average, he doesn’t make at least a deep run in the playoffs this year he needs to be let go! Semis or bust as next year is a total re build

He won the West his first year and has won double digit games his first 2 yesrs despite LSU winning 11 games TOTAL the 2 years before him. They'll still doubt him next year even if he makes the CFP this year at 10-2 or better.

Ain't no way Freeman is top 4

Uhhhh….he has a .767 winning percentage during his first 4 years as a HC, took over a major program as a first time HC, and was in the NC game last year…..you should talk less

Beat Clemson and you’re in the top 10 next May!

Kelly inherited a depleted roster (39 scholarship players) at LSU and managed to win the SEC West and beat AL in his first season. His NIL revenue was approximately 5 million, while Playoff teams like Ohio State and Texas spent $20 million plus!
LSU finally has got him some talent to compete with… judge him on this season, as he finally has a roster with adequate talent!
Leaving him off this list is a joke.

Blah Blah Blah, by year 3 he’s should at the minimum been in a 13 team playoff. Losing badly to a 4,loss gump team at home last year is unacceptable. His teams typically are poor defensively. No playoffs this year bring back Ed, he won it in year 3, PERIOD!

12 team playoff

I do agree with you on how he has lost at LSU being all blowouts.
Saban
Miles
Orgeron.... all won in year 3. Just to back you up a lil more. But I don't see how matt Campbell is on there.

Winning the SECW in his first year after inheriting 39 players was more coaching than half this list put together.

Yeah a coach that has won less than double digit games TWICE in the last 10 years is not a top 10 coach. Does anybody remember qhere they ranked Dabo last year? Lol. Shows how unserious these lists are.

Kelly is the oldest guy out of these names. I doubt he will reverse the hands of time

It’s really ridiculous considering the constant sucking off of Kelly when he was at their beloved Notre Dame. The Yankee elitists hate that he left them for us “Southern peasants.”

Look I’m critical of Kelly but Freeman, Whittingham, and Campbell above him is dumb shite. These lists are always dumb.

I think there are a couple frauds on that list. Five years from now, a retrospective of the best coaches of 2025 will look very different.

He deserves to be left off. What has he done since he has been here? nothing

I believe it said 29 W’s and a Heisman winner. Left off SECW winner in first year when he started out with only 39 players.

Freeman is way too high; Kiffin is way too low.

Deboer at 7 will not date well either.

Win the title this year and shove it up their asses sideways with a twist.

I agree with them

They left him off because the winningest coach in Fighting Irish football history voluntarily left them for Louisiana State, and that is unacceptable!

If they wanna do something list NIL spend for the last three years. That’s the only fair way to assess these coaches. Here are the facts Texas, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Penn State, and Alabama have all out spent LSU for football recruits.
Marcus Freeman inherited a playoff and edge playoff team from Kelly. Kelly inherited a dumpster fire at both LSU and ND. It took him putting up his own money to get fans to invest in NIL. Like it or not this is the world we live in.
