Ed Orgeron spoke to the media on Tuesday evening and talked about how differently he handled hiring a new coaching staff this offseason, compared to the previous year when he admitted that he didn't even interview some of the coaches that were hired.
quote:

"I think we did a great job of hiring the coaches and a great job of interviewing them," Orgeron said. "I hired some coaches that I didn't even interview from the last staff and I'm never doing that again."

"On offense, I'm happy with them. I talked to Joe (Brady) about them, and I interviewed them. I told them exactly what I wanted and they had the answers. They are very smart. I couldn't be more pleased with them."

"Daronte (Jones) was like the fourth or fifth choice. But so was I. Who cares? He's here and he's doing a tremendous job. Andre Carter, I'm so excited about him as our DL Coach. Blake (Baker) is doing a great job."

"DJ (Mangas) and Jake (Peetz) are doing a great job. I'm very please with our offense and our defense."

Deronte Jones was his 4th or 5th choice. Lol. O needs to keep his gumbo hole shut at times.

Well, he's learned that he should at least talk to people before he hires them. He's getting there! Go Coach O!! At least hes honest

He might mean he didn't interview the holdovers from Les' staff since they were already co-workers. His comments can be read that way. If he meant last year's hires.... oof.

That's a pretty dumb interpretation of his words.

Out of all of the people I've hired over the years I came to one conclusion. I could not have spoken to a single one and probably had the same success rate. Interviews are one of the top 5 most useless things man has ever conceived.

Maybe the decision was made over his head, without him interviewing them or giving his input. Maybe he told the head she'd he wouldn't agree to that any more. Maybe.

This is a very disappointing comment by CEO.

Not surprised if this were more common than expected---in college and maybe to some extent in the pros. Someone gets hired based on a lengthy resume mixed with past personal/working relationship, more so than a rigorous interview to see if they're truly a good fit for the current position. I'm not going to bash Orgeron for being open about making poor decisions. At least he recognizes it and is working to correct them.

a 59 year old coach who makes $6 million shouldn't make mistakes like this. You can't just give him a pass by saying he recognizes them and is working to correct them. That doesn't fly for something as sloppy and egregious as this.

Nobody face plants quite like Ed O. . .

In my experience, interviews don’t do much except maybe tell you a little about the temperament of the candidate. Resumes and work history’s speak for themselves.

Uggggg, for one thing you will know if you like them and can get along with them.

uh, temperament of the candidate is VERY important in most jobs, but certainly in coaching. Can he get along with his offensive coaches, the head coach, and the players??? A resume doesn't tell that at all.

Nothing about this is new. Colleges do this all the time. They sow assistant coaches to hire their special position coaches. Coach simply stated he would not allow this again.

Is the "last staff" Les Miles' staff? Or, is that last years staff?

Yeah well, I’ll take a coach who is able to admit his mistakes and learn from them over one who’s ego will not allow him to do either.

Can't believe 'O' admitted to hiring an assistant coach without an interview. Certainly didn't have to cop to this, but I suppose we should appreciate his honesty and transparency?!?
