Athlon Sports spoke with several anonymous SEC coaches who happen to think that former LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda leaving in the offseason to be the head coach at Baylor might not hurt the Tigers...

"I think you saw a few times where Dave's scheme was so intricate it was overwhelming the players, especially if they had some depth issues or were banged up. Bo Pelini is going to live nicely with Ed."

New defensive coordinator Bo Pelini was hired this offseason to replace Aranda.

I can’t believe some fans think Aranda wasn’t the real deal and overrated. Aranda was actually underrated after some piled on him last year. When the offense is motorboating every team, the defense is gonna be on the field way more. Add injuries and points are gonna be scored.

That 2019 unit was filthy when it was healthy and locked in at the end of the season. What that D was able to do to OU and Clemson was big time.

I sometimes thought Aranda did try to many things on defense. I mean these are 19-22 year old kids trying to run all these crazy zones etc... I think Bo gets LSU back to blitzing and bringing pain to the opposing QB. Defense will be fun to watch again under Pelini.

I agree. I always thought he would end up in the NFL due to how complicated his defenses could be sometimes.

LSU was recruiting a player in Oxford, Alabama. The coaching staff asked Aranda to give them a 10 cent explanation of his defense. They said the summary was so confusing they had no idea how the players were supposed to keep everything straight. While I liked Aranda, I am excited to have Bo back in the Bayou.

Bo is back! Dave was great while he was here, but, his scheme sometimes not only fooled the opposing offense, but had his players confused as well...

Why did they not make that comment when he was still here? Our D has been great for all the years he was with us. He is so much better than chief and Steele. Let me guess who made those comments--the losers over at A&M and Ole Miss.

Well results speak for themselves. Aranda's D best year was 30th or so in the nation. Bo had three straight in the top 3. Aranda was solid, not great. I think Bo can be great.

No one can argue that Aranda was a major contributing factor to us winning it all last season. Also, Aranda was not the end all to DC. We dont need Einstein down here... we'll be fine.

I bet if you ask every coach in the SEC if they would rather have Aranda or Pelini 80 - 90% of them will say Pelini. His style with the type of athletes the elite programs in the SEC recruit are a perfect match. Aranda's finesse D is better suited to the Pac-12.

Aranda was an ok defensive coordinator but I never felt he was worth all the godlike talk on the rant. Last year's defense was, at times, barely good enough for the win. Offense let the defense off the hook more last year. Later in the year they seemed to somewhat get their crap together, but I wasn't really sad to see Aranda go. I wish him the best.

I agree with erything you just said except i don't wish him the best; he poached a lot of lsu coaches and has been caught trying to steal lsu players and recruits as well
