Talented five-star safety Jacoby Mathews announced Friday that he is decommitting from LSU and has reopened his recruitment.

The Ponchatoula, LA native originally gave his verbal pledge to Tigers back in November of 2020, picking LSU over schools like Alabama, Georiga, Mississippi State, Texas, Oklahoma, and Michigan State.

I'm really concerned that all of this NIL stuff is going to honestly ruin my desire to watch college athletics. The fact that they are amateur athletes was the huge appeal to me. I hope I'm wrong but it doesn't look good.

This is gonna be a new thing. Shopping around for the best booster supported NIL guarantees is going to be a thing now. Not the kids fault, it’s just the new landscape.

Need to make a new rule, you can sign a letter of intent at any point in time during your senior season of highschool. And you can’t enter the portal until after your freshman season. People don’t realize how much time, effort, and resources Are spent on recruits

While I agree, that system will be abused too. The same recruits that flip the I’ll just wait until the last minute to sign. In the case of a very late 5 star flip, it would leave little time for the coaches to find a replacement. IMO, the problems for coaches would still exist. Hidden money has always caused a lot of recruiting mayhem, but now it’s in our face. For most guys without family money or true love for a school, it won’t be about team anymore, it’s gonna be about the money. Amateurism in major college athletics is over.

"I've decided to see who has the best money for me, thanks to NIL. Respect my decision."

kids used to think they won the lottery getting to play football and receive a degree for doing so - what an honor it was. This entire NIL thing will kill college football IMO. There will be so many loopholes that it will just trun in to the NFL. I see a major upheavel coming in a few years.

I love CFB, but if it's degenerating into bidding wars, as opposed to actual recruiting, I'm out.

Pre-NIL versus post. Needs to see where the money is. Welcome to the brave new world of "amateur" athletics.

I don't "respect" anyone who breaks a commitment. Funny how the word "respect" gets thrown around all the time and yet a lot of those same people who use it a lot don't practice the word "respect."
user avatar
Respect is earned. If anything, knowing I cannot trust his word makes me lose respect. Ultimately, he’s a kid and I don’t care that much one way or the other whether he comes here because the program will be great with or without him.

count me in too. The effort put forth and then they decommit. Not good. Lost time of recruiting another guy in his place. Got to be frustrating for the coaches. It is for the fans for sure. I could not be a college recruiter for sure.

i sound like a broken record around here, NOTHING MATTERS UNTIL THE PEN HITS THE PAPER IN FEBRUARY, all this commitment shite and star ratings just provides the recruiting sites with income

“Respect it”? Who tells these guys to write this? Empathizing...Maybe they just don’t know how large of a stage they’re on just yet. Like, maybe they just think they’re talking to their coaches, families and friends. Still, it’s absurd. Respect that mfrs! Respect Me!

Oh yeah they know only too well. That's the problem. Why even bother making a commitment? That way you can be covered on TV in an elaborate ceremony to post on a;; your social media. UGH!
