After striking out Jack Kocon for the final out to send Mounds View to State, pitcher Ty Koehn made a beeline for the beaten batter and embraced him, all while his teammates rushed the field, celebrating wildly.

But there’s a story behind this act of tremendous sportsmanship, the pair are old friends and have known each other since childhood.

“We are very close friends,” Koehn told BMTN. “I knew him from all the way back when we were 13. We were on the same little league team. It was tough when we went to separate schools but we kept in touch.”

“I knew the game was going to keep going or it was going to end right there,” Koehn added. “I knew I had to say something. Our friendship is more important than just the silly outcome of a game. I had to make sure he knew that before we celebrated.”

“It was more instinct, it just felt right.”

I had a close friend all my life. We played every sport imaginable, and we were super competitive, but super close. The world maybe fawning over this "show" of support, but in that moment, I bet you anything the batter wanted him to just go cebrate with his team. A lot of the guys fainting over this in here, I wonder if you ever really competed in anything?

I never did this on the field. On the field against friends it was always quick BS stuff. Quick laugh stuff. So I would say something like, "your mom still sunbathing in the nude?" Or, "I heard you got sent down to JV earlier this year man." Just stupid stuff like that. God I miss playing HS ball.

He could have easily done that after celebrating with his team. It’s a nice gesture, but I know if I’m ever competing against friends, relatives, siblings, etc., I’m extra motivated to win. I’d probably celebrate first, but to each their own.
