Jay Glazer Says Daunte Culpepper & Zach Thomas Tried To Fight Saban During His NFL Stint

Nick Saban almost came to blows with two NFL stars during his stint as Miami Dolphins head coach in 2004. According to NFL insider Jay Glazer, Daunte Culpepper and Zach Thomas were not into Saban's hard tactics...

"Nick Saban, the reason why he didn't make it in the NFL, Daunte Culpepper tried to fight him one day and the security guy stepped in," Glazer said.

"And then I think his final straw is that he questioned Zach Thomas' toughness and Zach almost kicked his butt. That just doesn't work on this level."

Glazer said he's hoping Urban Meyer doesn't follow down the same path as Saban now that he's made the jump from college to the NFL ... explaining the former Buckeyes coach just has to treat his Jaguars players differently.

"I know Urban's not one of those guys who tries to go after you and demean you," Glazer said, "but I said just make sure you don't do any of that on this level. Because it doesn't work on this level."

All 5' 1" of Saban would've been knocked into the ground by those two! The NFL is the highest level of football and he couldn't get it done without his usual talent imbalance so he quit and ran away.

That's because in the NFL, the coach isn't the boss. The coach is one small part of the organization. Players don't suffer real consequences for not giving effort, or for being shitty people. They make millions of dollars, and if they're good enough, somebody will pay them no matter what. The NFL works fine for coaches who just want to play "team manager". It's not for coaches who like to inspire people, teach people, and help them grow as men.

I doubt Saban is embarrassed or ashamed of his NFL failures. He is the greatest college coach of all time. Pretty sure he is OK with that.

It has to kill Saban that, no matter what success he has in his career, he was a total abject failure as an NFL coach. He wasn’t able to get it done at the most competitive level and flat out quit.
