Alabama Tried To Help Tennessee’s Former AD During Their Head Coaching Search?
© Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports
During Tennessee's crazy 25-day search for a new head coach to replace Butch Jones, Alabama reached out to help. Apparently, a Crimson Tide administrator sent then-Tennessee AD John Currie some head coach power rankings they created. This note is from Nov. 13, one day after Jones got canned, per Rocky Top Insider...
quote:

Hello John,

My name is Kyle Vasey and I am an assistant AD for strategic planning at Alabama. Greg Byrne asked me to send you some analysis we performed on head coaches recently. You’ll find an excel spreadsheet which ranks head coaches based on a metric we created called: coaching efficiency. This metric is a weighted score which incorporates various factors such as national championships, final AP ranking, overall win percentage, etc. You’ll also find a pdf file which analyzes coaches based on their previous coaching experience: Power 5 Head Coach, Power 5 Assistant Coach, former NFL head coach, etc

I am happy to answer any questions you might have on the data.

Thanks,

Kyle Vasey
Uhhhh...why?

What UT doesn't know is that there was a Trojan horse attached to that PDF file and we are watching their every move now.

Maybe Bama knew they would come after Pruitt so they were giving them there list of names to throw them off? Maybe thinking if its good enough for Bama its good enough for us....

"This metric is a weighted score which incorporates various factors such as national championships..." Well, that was surprising. I assumed the letter would have ended there, followed by a lot of laughing emoticons at the idea UT will ever have an NC-winning coach again.

It's a big list, and Orgeron is there. The bottom fifteen are really interesting. As in really close in numbers to Kirby Smart at Georgia. The chart separates coaches' careers by school, so you can see Saban at Bammer vs Saban at LSU.

But the Gump really did help, they gave up their DC to help them out.

This is the saddest thing I’ve ever heard of.

Bama: We are way better than you at football and now it's watering down our rivalry. Here is a list of really good coaches that you should consider hiring. You'll see at the top of the list you have a shot at is Leach, Gundy, les mil... Tennessee: we see what you're trying to do. You're trying to keep us away from your unhinged d coordinator. Bama: no we're not. We are trying to help. We've beat you 11 straight years and we feel bad. Jeremy is a loose cannon that needs Saban to keep him groun... Tennessee: you can't trick us. Sally shred the mike leach contract. We're getting Pruitt!

Sounds like an Bama assistant trying to get his name out there for the work he’s performed.

It's a Bama assistant doing what he was instructed to do. Greg Byrne and John Currie are old friends.

Maybe bama can hire John Currie as an intern. They could get the band back together. He and Butch are pals.
