Did anyone notice after Truss came in the game we were more consistent on Offense? I rewatched the game and Truss was unleashing fury on the VOLS defensive front. Will Kirby play that position like he do at QB and leave Truss at RG?

quote:

After Georgia's second offensive possession ended in a punt, Kirby Smart and Matt Luke opted to make a change at right guard; starter Warren Ericson came out for Xavier Truss.
Georgia's unit found some consistency following the switch as they opened numerous holes in the running game, which burst through for 274 yards and only allowed two sacks, helping guide Georgia to a big win.

I don't know. WE has been pretty solid since filling in for Tate. Truss did play well after he settled down.

Honestly, he's felt pretty spotty... It's sometimes hard to figure out if it's him or SVPG specifically, but the 2 of them together have given up some pressures without much fight on more than a few occasions.

I don't know if Truss is outright better than WE, but I would like to see him continue to get some burn with the rest of the starting OL to find out before we start mass substituting in the next couple of games.

To be fair to WE, Truss does have the consistent problem of ending up on the ground... seems like he has a real problem with retaining balance when working out in space, even against undersized defenders.

As far as guards go, truss is still better than most in my opinion in space. He is much more athletic than WE in my opinion.

He got flat on his face on an interior block, though. Ended up tripping the tailback. Despite a few blemishes, he appeared significantly better than WE, imo. After all, we accept those same types of blemishes from Shaffer each week (falling flat on his face).

If Broderick Jones keeps playing well, does Salyer move to a guard spot?

That’s the ideal scenario - Salyer kicks into LG Shaffer slides over to RG. Truss is going to be good just not consistent yet.

I loved Truss' ability to get into the space of the linebackers.

He's not the most physical blocker, but he may be the most effective.

Just makes you wonder what could have been with Ratledge. There were serious rumblings in fall camp that even as a RS Freshman, he may challenge Salyer as our best overall lineman and he breaks his damn foot on play 2.

A lot of fans feel this way, only time will tell if Kirby and the coaches feel like they want to do this. My gut based on what we've seen from Kirby is that this is not the *most* likely outcome, but I'd be surprised if they don't at least give it some serious consideration in practice to see how it plays.

Personally I like what I've seen from him of late. If you get a chance to watch the most recent Brooks Austin (maybe it was an NBR) he shows one of the clips of Truss in space getting knocked down by a DB and fortunately JC is able to jump over his leg rather than trip, but probably cost a few yards in cutback potential.

You dont take someone playing well and depend upon him to block will anderson or ohio state in a playoff game.

Salyer is an elite college left tackle now. Our best line has him at left tackle.

I dont know more than the coaches. But i continually feed Truss reps at RG to see if he can grab the spot over Ericson.

All I can say about the UGA OL is #50 is not very good.

FWIW, #50 Ericson was one of the ones that had the flu, I believe...

Eh... he's playing out of position at this point after losing the starting C job to SVPG by way of a broken hand. At worst, he's our 6-7th best OL right now from the standpoint of experience and knowing what to do and where to be. Is he as athletically gifted as some of the guys behind him, no... but he's been a very much needed contributor. Maybe worth thinking about before rushing to judgement.

I honestly had put more of that on SVPG but I could very well be wrong. I figured WE was helping with calling the protections.

Yeah, I won't claim to have elite knowledge of OL play by any means, so I'd defer to others, but I do think at this point, he's been a focal point for defenses looking to generate pressure. SVPG looking better of late but WE still having problems also leads me to believe it's at least more him than SVPG, even if there is shared responsibility, but again that's more assumption/deduction than anything.

SVPG needs work on footwork. He tends to get sideways on blocking instead of in front, and quick defenders slide right by him. Noticed that in several games this year.

Kirby commented that Truss gives us a lot more size and power in there. Sounds like they like his upside at guard.
