I think it has to be O-line.

O-line is certainly the biggest hope for improvement.

Other than that I'll say special teams, though that is also just a hope, not based on any specific reason to expect improvement.

That would be huge.

Any reason(s) why you think that?

They went live on it all throughout spring and early in fall camp. Kirby has made it a point to mention multiple times, felt they were caught in the wrong defense too much down there, also returning 10 starters on defense. Lastly, pretty much can't do worse.....

Only place to go is up. I'm still totally baffled by how bad our red zone defense was.

Definitely can't do much worse.

With the same personnel coming back, I'm worried about containing the edge again in the red zone.

But I like reading that it was a priority all offseason.

I'm not exactly sure what 'caught in the wrong defense' means unless we are going to sit some starters for different personnel (do you sit Lorenzo Carter and Davin Bellamy?)

We play like 80% of our defense out of a nickel package. On sustained drives, we were not able to get our big boys in quick enough, that's why the edge was available. Kirby says they worked on that a lot.

That's second on my list. I can't take anymore games like Nicholls St., Tech, and Vandy......even UT.

We seemed very confused at times. I think that'll be solved now that we're in the staff's second season. We've got so much talent and speed on that side of the ball.

Talent level, experience, and the general physicality that comes with those two things.

I look for the defense to play much faster in year 2 of Kirby/Mel's system.

I think the added bulk on the Oline will at least help with opening holes for Chubb/Michel. We have a few road graders up there now.

If we show we can stretch the field...especially on early downs ... if we can catch the football... and if we can make defenses respect the whole field... the Oline will magically become much better and the running game will follow.

I don't disagree with you and I'm certainly not getting into that pissing match that you and the other guy had going on. My thoughts are that even if the young and inexperienced olineman have problems in pass pro and making their reads they should still be able to fire out and move bodies to open up running lanes.

That's not a bad approach. We were running some complex pulls and reads last year and we were outnumbered a lot. You can protect young lines by keeping them out of sure passing downs and keeping the defense honest. I really hope to see our staff has learned from last year. The think they were on the right path as the season progressed for the most part.

Peter Buck's point, and I think it's a valid one, is that to open running lanes, a pro-style offense needs to make defenders respect the downfield pass. Until we can do that with decent consistency, defensive coordinators will put more bodies at the LOS than we can effectively block.

I agree with both of you on that point. Hopefully we have a couple of guys that can create separation and Eason has progressed enough to find them.

That will fix a lot of our ills I truly believe.
