Wilson was more physical than the other one, imo

yeah idk the stats, but I would be willing to bet he didnt have more than 10 TFL last year. Making half your tackles 8 yards down field does not mean you're a run stopper. though, I'm thankful he made them because lord knows no one in the secondary was.
Plus, he has always seemed slow to me.
He had 11 TFL and 4 sacks last year. He isn't particularly fast, but he is almost always a sure tackler which is what you need in the middle of a 3-4 defense.

I stand corrected, but I still think he is overrated. Sure tackler no doubt, but that isn't an elite skill, or at least it shouldn't be.

It's starting to sound like we're going to have a pass rush for days. Carter, Floyd, Jenkins and Bellamy can all play.

Ray Drew
Will be fine. If Rocker is trying to build a no name d-line what better way than to keep the most notable guy out of the first string rotation. Come game day Ray will see plenty of snaps.

DGD/Deeprig, I wouldn't put too much stock in the rumors. Instead listen to what Rocker and Drew says...
Don't you think Rocker would play Drew against the second and third team b/c he knows his abilities, is comfortable with his production, and wants to focus on the other no name guys to lift their production not to mention helping the offensive line lift their production? This would go with his no name defense philosophy. If they all produce in similar fashion then there would be no stand outs but the defense would be an awesome unit together.
Also I read Rocker wants to be able to rotate and have no drop off in production so this kind of goes together with my theory.
quote:
Rocker insists he doesn’t need one overpowering figure to lead his unit. He’s in the process of molding a collective group.“I just need them to stay together and play together and the rest of it will take care of itself,” Rocker said.
quote:
“The potential I see, we’re only as good if we’re all together,” Rocker said. “We don’t have a guy that’s just a single out guy. I don’t see one. We’re not there. We’re a good defense together and when we do that, somebody is going to come out of the pack and everyone will see.”
quote:
Ray is going to be fine. Ray is going to peak at the right time for us. So I don’t worry. Ray has played in a lot of games. He will be a factor for us here in the fall.”
quote:
“With coach Rock coming in, he does a lot more coaching,” Drew said. “I know that sounds crazy the way I say it. He’s showing us more moves to just get us outside the normal swim, rip, things of that nature. … He’s an amazing coach. He comes in showing us how he wants us to do it, teaching us step-by-step and the right technique. He teaches us what he wants from us and what he expects.”

Gentry at 247 said that Drew was rotating in with the 2nd string a lot at practice. He said that it's probably more of a testament to how well Sterling Bailey has progressed, that Drew is running with the 2's. With how Rocker plans on rotating guys, though, I expect Drew will see plenty of snaps.

Practice is just that...practice. Its a good way to gauge who should play and what not, but the great thing is...in a little over a week and a half, all of these guys will get a chance to show what they can do when it matters....on the fricking field. Drew rose to the top thanks to his beastly play...thats how you get starts. If he performs, then all of this won't matter.

Do you think there are some guys that are practice stars and then some that are game stars?
Last year or maybe it was the year before I remember the coaches saying how great Thorton and Bailey were doing in preseason practice, but you didn't hear much out of them when it was game time.
I mean Thorton even had players calling him out in preseason calling him Meatball and saying how great he was doing for such a little guy compared to the other linemen.
I guess it's just kind of interesting to me that a guy can go (Meat)balls to the wall in practice but disapear during the game.
What's your take away given all the hype these guys get preseason? Is this just the players way of trying to help a brother out or are they really that good and if so why not in the game?

Meatball sacked Tajh Boyd last year. I think he played fine. He didn't have the size to play nose.
Smith had gotten a little bit fatter so Grantham moved him to that position, put meatball on the bench, and brought in Ray Drew to replace Smith on the end.
Smith's production at nose also sucked, but Drew on the end wound up leading the team in sacks.
Basically, if you want to be a shitty defensive lineman, play nose for Grantham.

Bailey just sounds like he's improved a lot. Cut weight, quicker, faster, more explosive.
I think with Thornton he's a better scheme for Pruitt. The nose in Grantham's scheme was intended to eat up blockers by being so big that 2 blockers was necessary. The 1-tech in Pruitt's scheme places more emphasis on taking up blockers by getting into gaps and getting penetration. Thornton is a better fit for that with his quickness and lower center of gravity.

Practice should indicate some ability, but sometimes it just doesn't translate into games.
Last scrimmage tonight, right? Closest thing to game situations. Should determine the 1's and 2's.

I kind of feel like he (Mike Thorton) could be a Geno Atkins type player if given the chance. Maybe that could be the case this year?

Looks like we are gonna have another red out
on the UGA facebook page. Dunno if it'll show up here.

Thought we were done with scrimmages and on to game preperation and regular practices...

It's what they refer to as a "dress rehearsal". It's kind of a scrimmage, kind of a Clemson walk-through.
Posted on 8/20/14 at 12:32 pm to IT_Dawg
This is a dress rehearsal scrimmage. Coaches in the box making sure we're set on communication, working on the transitions from STs to offense or defense, pre-game warmup, getting defensive signals from the sideline, getting different personnel groupings on and off the field, etc.
Basically work on the details and see if there's anything that needs to get cleaned up. It will be 1s vs. 2s (playing as Clemson)
