SDS: The Bowers (and McConkey, Milton and Mims) Effect
quote:
I need to start this column out with a writer’s note. I had every intention of focusing just on Brock Bowers’ return for the Georgia offense. The Bowers Effect. That’s what this was supposed to be about.
The junior All-America tight end came back from an ankle injury in just 26 days. His numbers weren’t eye-popping (3 catches for 34 yards and a touchdown), but his impact was immeasurable. The attention he garnered from the Ole Miss defense, coupled with that of wide receiver Ladd McConkey, opened up the kind of space the Bulldogs have been waiting for all year. Even when he wasn’t catching passes, he was loosening up the Rebels’ defense for guys like Rara Thomas and Dominic Lovett.
That was supposed to be the story here. And then Georgia kept scoring. And scoring. And scoring.
quote:
Against the No. 9-ranked team in the country, the Bulldogs won 52-17, solidifying themselves as favorites to three-peat, and the story became much more robust than just Bowers’ impact on the offense.
This is about getting the pieces in place. This is about finally seeing what this team was supposed to be. It’s about returning Amarius Mims to the offensive line, Bowers’ impact in the blocking and receiving games, coupling Bowers with McConkey, and getting the healthiest Kendall Milton you’ve ever seen in red and black.
This, Georgia fans, is what you’ve been waiting for. And, goodness, is it scary.

I didn't watch the LSU vs Mississippi game.
But we put more points against Ole Miss than LSU did.
It was the first game with a healthy Ladd and Bowers all season.
I think it was also the first game with a healthy OL and healthy Edwards/Milton all season.
And we did it by pulling Carson Beck after 2 snaps in the 4th quarter.
I'm not claiming to have a better offense than LSU.
But against the same defenses, we can score toe to toe with them.

Why not? Take Daniels off that team, and LSU might have three more losses this year.
Take Brock, Ladd, Mims, Edwards, etc off of ours (with tons of overlap) and we still have none.
LSU doesn't have a fricking great offense. They have a great player.
I wouldn't want their offense over ours, because the sum is greater than the parts.
I suspect that I'm not alone in this assessment.

We aren’t healthy, we are deep as frick though.
Case in point, did I see #3 Andrew Paul run in one at the end for TD? Good to see.

Kirbs getting RR and Paul ready for Bama. Think they will play a big role. It’s going to be a slug fest.

Why not?
Sample size of 1 game versus Ole Miss at home at 7pm.
LSU has been there all season long.
I'm comfortable with "close to or as good as" today.
Repeat it on the road in conference and you may have me convinced.

To put it another way...
I don't think we've seen the best of Dom Lovett yet.
I don't think we've seen the best of Ladd McConkey/Brock Bowers on the field at the same time yet.
I dont think we've seen the best of Ra Ra Thomas yet.
And I don't think we've seen the best of Dillon Bell yet.
The potential to be the #1 offense in the country is there.
But it is tough for me to claim that knowing we still have another level available to our passing game.

52-17, and it could have been even more lopsided.

I agree with all of this.
I guess, possibly, we just view what constitutes what an "offense" is differently.
And I may be the one viewing it wrong, certainly.
But LSU's offensive production will have a steep dropoff without one of their weapons (Daniels), while UGAs production has remained consistent all season, with few outliers, despite all sorts of injuries.
For me, this is not an argument about statistical dominance, and I fully concede that this is what is widely used to define what constitutes a "great offense". This is about the overall utility of an offense as a component of "team".
And hell, even viewing it in this light, maybe LSUs offense is what it has to be to be an adequate component of "team".
It's definitely an interesting conversation.

And because of these things, we haven't seen the best of Carson Beck yet, either.
He has a couple dimes last night that were NFL caliber throws. The tuddy to McConkey was a 40yd seed right in the breadbasket and right in stride. There was also the ~30yd bullet at the close of the 1st half to RaRa (I think), which was dropped. It was away from the defender and low, the only place that ball could be. Hit RaRa right in the damn hands. Incredible passes.
If he can get the deep ball going? Holy shite.

The combo of Bowers and McConkey are lethal.

That was the skinny post.
That throw made NFL GM's aroused.

That was a thing of beauty. Best throw I've seen all year. From anyone.

He also under threw one to him pretty bad that McConkey saved him on.
