Eason might play himself into the starting role or the #2 slot Saturday. He has been practicing with the #1 offense this week and will start the scrimmage with them.
Tyler Catalina has been with the #1s the last 4 practices as well. Maybe he has finally made that move up we hoped for.

I think this is the make or break scrimmage, no? The one where it pretty much determines the depth chart for practice rotations?

Ive heard the opposite on Catalina. Not looking like he'll start at LT from what I've heard but who knows. He might be practicing wth the 1s but coaches aren't impressed. FWIW

17 days till opening kickoff. This week and next will be for setting the starting lineup. This scrimmage will likely determine who the coaches think will do the job, and the last 2 weeks will be working on the opening game plan.
I think this is THE weekend to make first team.

We will essentially know our starters by next Wednesday. We will then begin preparations for UNC as well. Scrimmage + first couple days after to see how they settle/rebound will determine who they feel like starting. Don't count on an announcement though unless someone blows it so far out of the water they do.

I think this scrimmage determines the starter and that QB would get most of the reps going forward in preparation for UNC.

Eason may not start but he'll play soon enough.

I've heard the opposite from your opposite - that Catalina has stepped up his game and is in good position to anchor the line. Additionally, the play of the line and consistency they've shown since Catalina moved in at LT is part of the reason Eason is getting all the first team reps now. That play, along with Chubb and Michel making better than expected progress, has the coaches feeling like they won't be throwing him (Eason) out to the wolves.

It was mentioned that with solid line play and a healthy running game, they plan to keep Eason on a leash and put him in good positions to gain experience and make a few plays early on.

Now if the receivers could just catch the ball....

I'm expecting Reggie Davis to wake up and surprise a lot of people. Reggia can be a tremendous deep threat.

I hope to see our true freshmen tight ends making some noise. I think Nauta and Woerner are both going to excel.

I believe our TE game is gonna be better than '14 Tennessee. They kicked our arse on all the short passes... but those guys are huge

Yeah, regardless of what Kirby is saying, re: the QBs - he is giving Eason a chance to win the job - right now. A full week practicing with the ones and then a scrimmage. This is Eason's shot to take the reins from the opening kick of game one.

Eason to Reggie Davis could be a dynamic deep threat with the arm strength and speed combination.

I've been really disappointed with Javon Wims. Might be reading into too much but in a practice report a couple days back they said he was jogging through all his drills and wouldn't go full speed even though Coley was basically dog-cussing him the entire time the media was there. Seems to have an attitude problem. Also read several reports of balls going straight through his hands.

I'd second the opposite of the opposite there. Most accounts are that Catalina struggled when he first got here, but most are attributing that to the *dramatic* climate differential. Average temps for beginning of fall camp in Rhode Island for the past 3 seasons: 71 degrees. In Athens right now? Quite a bit hotter...

In the last 3-4 days, every account has been that not only is he practicing with the 1's but that he's challenging for a spot. Whether he starts or not, I'm not sure, but all accounts are that he's one of the "6 offensive linemen who can play winning football" according to CKS's comments.

There was also this gem of a quote from Chuks Amaechi that I'd referenced in the other thread regarding Pittman:
quote:

On new offensive tackle Tyler Catalina, a transfer from Rhode Island …

“He’s strong. He’s a strong kid. If you’re running off the edge, if you let him latch on to you, let him get his hands inside your chest plate, you might not make it. You might not go anywhere. He’s taking you where he wants to take you.”

Thats a shame I had high hopes for him with his size. On another note I heard Chigbu is having a good camp. Hopefully he can contribute as well.

Yeah, really thought he could be a monster with his size. Good downfield blocker and redzone threat. Maybe he turns it around, but not a good start as a JUCO with limited time remaining. Upside, it should mean that redzone packages feature TEs more heavily if we don't have size advantage at WR still.
