Six games in...our NCAA defensive stats:
Rushing Defense
1. Alabama
2. South Florida
3. Washington
4. Wisconsin
5. Georgia
Passing Efficiency Defense
1. South Florida
2. Michigan State
3. Northern Illinois
4. Michigan
5. Penn State
6 Georgia
Total Defense
1.Michigan
2. Washington
3. Georgia
4. Michigan State
5. Alabama
Scoring Defense
1. Penn State
2. Georgia
3. Washington
4. Alabama
Running the ol' stats calculator, it appears that to find a time when Georgia was this high performing on defense - both against the pass and run - you have to go back to 1983.
35 years ago. Wow. That was the team of Charlie Dean, Tony Flack, Darlyl Jones, Andre Holmes..Terry Hoage, John Little, Thurson and Culpepper in the middle.
Of course, they had Lastinger and Todd Wiliams at QB...we've got Fromm and Eason. They had Tron Jackon and Keith Montgomery and Big Barry Young. We've got Chubb, Michel, and Swift. They had Clarence Kay and Herman Archie. We've got Nauta, Blazevitch, and Woerner.
We're more the complete team.
We could be scary good if our defense and offense put it all together. Keep up the recruiting pace and we'll truly be reloading every year....

They also had Kevin Butler...their best offensive weapon.
That was an outstanding defense though.Better than '80,'81 and '82 IMO

We are also the only team to appear on all of those lists.

Our defense is nasty. Someone on here posted a thread on tRant about what would happen if UGA played BAMA in week 7, the projected score was 28 - 27 UGA. That has a lot to do with those young men playing defense.
The fact that computer simulation calls it that close is affirmation that we are headed in the right direction. FROMMWARD!!!

We match up with Bama pretty well. Their strength is in the run game, our strength is in stopping the run. Our weakest are is defending the pass, their not a great passing team. We have contained 4 mobile QBs already this season. However they are more talented at just about every position, so I do think they would probably win 28-27. That's impressive though, the fact that CKS and UGA make that big of a jump in a year

Kinda curious as to how Washington is ranked ahead of us in total defense when they aren't even ON the passing defense list. Same with Meatchicken, actually. I'm guessing there are stats that go into the calculation that aren't represented here.

We are getting closer to becoming a championship level team under Smart. What is missing is better balance on offense. We will not be able to run easily on the better defenses, Auburn in particular. We will need to fill that void with the passing game. We also need a better pass rush. Vandy's QB too often had plenty of time to go through his full progression and then some and picked us apart pretty well at times.

Do you have a link for those stats in the OP?

I'm curious how South FL is first or second against the run and against the pass but are not top 5 in total defense?

Good question. South Florida is "only" #15 in total defense.
Even though South Florida's opponents haven't completed a high percentage of passes (hence USF's great pass efficiency defense), USF has still allowed 300 yards more in passing yardage than the next team down in pass efficiency defense.
So, looks to me that total defense and scoring defense are the stats that really matter most....

No one knows if we can throw the ball or not because we haven't had to throw it much. I worry about it but I also worry about our offensive line run blocking and even though the defenses we have run on haven't been great we have improved immensely in run blocking. Hell Fromm may very well be able to go 28 of 35 for about 280 and 3 TDs and no ints......no one knows yet......he was highly recruited at a very good high school program in a very competitive HS region.....if he can't put up those kinds of numbers when needed he wouldn't have been recruited like he was......

It would be a thing of beauty to hang 350 yds on Bama on the ground in the SECCG and just humble them with our W.

Yep, we don't know yet but with enough high quality receivers I think Fromm could put up those kind of numbers. What I mean by this is for instance we have enough stud running backs to sub them in and out as needed to keep them fresh. But do we have enough quality depth at the receiver positions to send some of them out on 60 yard patterns, substitute and then send them out again on the next down on similar long patterns? Do this against against a defense that doesn't have enough quality depth in the defensive backfield (gassed defenders) and you have the formula for big time passing game.

USF gives up 50 yards per game more than Georgia.
