Yep, thanks for checking. Social media today has got me thinking a whole lot about Anthony Jeselnik's "thoughts and prayers"

Around here, it hasn't even been on the news because they just found Coronavirus in ATL. I just heard about it on my cousin's Facebook page, she lives 1 street over from the destruction.

Overblown? Excuse me? Let's try a little scenario here.

Okay. First, close your eyes.

Now, imagine you have a bad cold. Maybe not the worst cold you've ever had, but definitely top 5 worst colds you've ever had. Maybe top ten. We'll settle on top 8. Deal? Deal.

Now open your eyes.

Does that seem overblown? We should all be very, very afraid.

Exactly what's happening.

And imagine a virus that in infected 60 million and killed 12,000 in the US.

That was the N1N1 virus in '09 and the Coronavirus is drop in the bucket compared to H1N1 and we also have a much quicker reaction from the Feds than we did make back in '09... by about 6 months and 1000 more deaths.

Got a wedding to attend there in 6 weeks. Haven't checked on venues or houses or anything yet. Just made sure family was okay (blocks away and scary for em) and will let the dust settle a bit before inquiring.

CDC says for the 2017-2018 FLU season, there were 61,000 deaths - so let's not panic about the coronavirus just yet

This tornado did hurricane like damage as it pertains to the scope and scale.

Told the wife before we went to bed that it was unusually warm and that was a bad sign.

My son is a hospice nurse. I couldn't do it.

He never talks about "thoughts and prayers". He spends every weekend making sure that his patients are comfortable. He will sit bedside and listen to them. He says they know they are dying and most of them are OK with it. They don't want pity, they don't want their family to despair and have sorrow.

It's part of life and they accept it. He also said that one of the downsides of his job is dealing with the family. He's not there for the emotional aspects, he's there to care for the patient

Lew, if you are reading this, would you mind sending me a transcript of my thread that was deleted today on SECRant before I had a chance to read the responses?

This new virus is way more powerful than H1N1. There are two metrics that make this considerably more contagious and deadly:

R0 (how infectious it is):
H1N1 = ~1.5
COVID = ~3

CFR (death rate):
H1N1 = 0.08%
COVID = 3.4% (Latest WHO estimate)

This would make this new virus significantly more infectious and fatal than the Spanish flu of 1918 (R0 2, CFR 2.5%), which killed tens of millions of people worldwide. This new virus is disproportionately killing the sick and elderly, as this is already being called the "Boomer Pox."

It ain't the end of the world, but this ain't no typical "flu" either.

I 100% agree with the overall point you're making, as I don't think people understand sometimes the relative comparisons exactly. With that said, Spanish flu in 1918 death total is tough to compare to modern day just given the advancements in available care and general hygiene across the board.

I'm most concerned as we're working on baby #2 here, and really can't afford for my wife to get sick right now... I think a lot of people forget that "immuno-compromised" can include people who aren't chronically sick or elderly. And while she might not be at risk of dying, she certainly is at risk of losing little Fib #2.

Luckily, this doesn't appear to affect infants as much as some other viruses.

I'm sure you guys will be fine.

The mortality rate is waaaaaaaaay off right now.

The only people getting tested are people who are being hospitalized for it or direct contact with those people.

The fact the mortality rate is only 3% among those who are actually hospitalized for it, tells me it's basically the regular flu.

14% mortality rate if you are over 80... let's say that raw number is legit (it's not), I would say at least 14% of people over 80 are immunocompromised with a condition or medication for something else that makes you immunocompromised.
