UGA tried to hire Mike Bobo, according to Andy Staples, the longtime Sports Illustrated reporter who now works for The Athletic.

After Bobo was terminated last weekend as Colorado State’s head coach, there was rampant speculation that UGA might like to bring back Bobo as the team’s offensive coordinator. Bobo, who was a player or assistant coach for the Bulldogs for 22 years, was officially hired by South Carolina on Tuesday.

There weren’t any media reports about UGA coach Kirby Smart actually approaching Bobo with an opportunity, until Staples mentioned it as part of an article on Thursday:

“I think Smart will try to change the offense. The question is how far he’ll be willing to go. (Smart) tried to hire (Bobo) … but South Carolina coach Will Muschamp won the tug-of-war between former Georgia teammates to hire their former teammate Bobo. Bobo would have opened up the offense …”

There’s a lot to analyze from Staples’ article. For background information, Smart and Bobo remain best of friends after rooming together as UGA football teammates in the early 1990s.

Flash forward to now: UGA has a first-year offensive coordinator James Coley, who was promoted from the team’s quarterbacks coach. Coley has been highly-visible this week while out on the road recruiting for the Bulldogs.

Staples did not outright say that UGA specifically offered Bobo as offensive coordinator, although it appears that Bobo would’ve been in charge by saying “Bobo would have opened up the offense.” If so, would Coley have been moved back to QBs coach?

Tug of war? Uh, lets' see. OC at USCe or position coach at UGA? Easy choice.

Coley would have been WR Coach. Bobo would have been QB

I had a friend that used to legit go to that place weekly to get jacked off. He didn't have a problem getting laid either, he just had a fetish for getting jacked off by asian women.

Initially I was weary about Kirby hiring from "within the family," but I don't like what this implies.

What's the likelihood Bobo goes to SCe if this were something Kirby thought of as urgent? I really wouldn't give half a shite about if I didn't think it meant Kirby is, if not ok, then less than seriously concerned with the offense as it is.

That makes me concerned.

It suggests a few folks Kirby could look at to take over play calling, Fromm may decide to leave or stay based on any offensive philosophy shifts, and etc.

That sounds like a hit piece by Andy Staples. If he knows what position Bobo was offered, why not say so. But if he knows "Bobo would have opened up the offense", then he does know what position Bobo was offered? Or he doesn't?

So he leaves the reader thinking that Smart wouldn't agree to open up the offense and thus Bobo turned down an equal position, despite being a former UGA player and coach. Andy appears to be having a tug of war with the details of what happened.

Being best friends is really a negative as far as hiring someone in a volatile industry

I think the overlooked part of this is Kirby isn’t going anywhere but if Muschamp loses too many games next year Bobo puts himself in a good spot to take over. We can’t offer that.
