If a new coach was to be brought in, I don’t think “pretty cheap” is the right way to approach it. Perhaps the saying “go big or go home” makes more sense.

Ftr crean makes over $3m a year. At the time that was practically unheard of for uga basketball and signaled an actual willingness to win. Results haven't been what we want but I don't think going cheap on a coach is gonna be a problem for us

Kelvin Sampson has proven over the years to be a great college basketball coach.

I would be onboard with Gregg Marshall but I have a feeling that he is untouchable right now because of the dumbass media blowback that would come from hiring him. It would be awesome if I was wrong on that.

IMO, we should make Greg McDermott a big offer and make him say no. He has been great at Creighton.

I remember when Tubby had excitement surrounding the program and I remember when the guy, had the son working in the department, both got fired for doing stupid crap. He generated excitement about the program, he was a good coach, also.

Georgia is not a destination job. Get an up and coming coach and he will leave, if he has success. How can that be changed?

That can be changed with money. The Tubby thing went wrong because
1) Tubby was underpaid
2) We didn’t make an effort to keep him. Not even symbolic. One that said we are in this shite now.
3) We hired a bargain basement guy with no HC experience or personality.

We basically turned back into the pumpkin and let everyone know basketball was a novelty at UGA.

Lazy fans?

Absolutely... Even with Smith, Herrick, Fox to a certain degree, did we have to BEG for fans to show up to support GOOD teams. I remember during the Smith and Herrick era there were reserved seats for faculty and staff, season ticket holders, etc... where seats would still be empty. I remember in 02 where UGA had an excellent team... 1k plus UK fans showed up in Athens and took over half the upper deck... I remember watching UGA vs Wisconsin... very good Wisconsin team... and seeing many more badger fans than there should be... I remember seeing 2-1 ratio in fans vs Illinois in the Gwinnett arena... Again... lazy fricking fans. Prove me wrong.

In football, would UGA allow opposing teams to “fill seats”.... I’ll help you all out... the answer is No. Why? Not only is the product better BUT fans want to go watch football. Basketball is harder to recruit both fans and players.

I remember a number of Ky games when they filled our stands. After they stole our Coach. Not sure how Coach Dooley could show his face in the stands those games after being punked by them and then punked in our own Coliseum by throngs of their fans taking the place over. He was probably happy to get the ticket $$$ tho. Cheap fricker.

I agree. I just am saying I watch a hella lot of schools not named the university of Georgia pull it off.

Good thing Alabama was able to land oats from Buffalo...I can only imagine the arms race between the two...

Facts it is harder. Also facts people not named us do a lot more with a lot less.

Talent rich state ?
Endless cash ?
Desirable campus ?
Quality education ?
Youthful distractions ?

Yes there is more to it than that but you better damn well be at least over .500 with that which seems to be the bar for us

They haven't been ranked once in the last ten fricking years and you want to blame the fans.

The highest they've been ranked in the last 20 years is 15th.

They have have made the tournament 4 times in 20 years.

And you want to blame the fans.

e was the best coach we've had in my lifetime, he wasn't known as an ace recruiter by my Lord the man could coach. It'd be laughable if it wasn't so sad how he was completely railroaded by our athletic department and the media for shite that is far, far, far less serious than dozens of programs today get away with without so much as a slap on the wrist. Harricks final team that was banned from postseason was legit final 4 caliber and they never even got the chance

This. I could have written this. I had season tickets forever. Steg is right down the hill from my house. That last Harrick team was gonna be the reward to patient fans like I, and Adams fricked us.

That’s when I realized nobody gives a good goddamn about the fans and thank god I dropped my tickets then and there. It’s been a total shitshow ever since and will continue to be so.

Remember when the 1996 Olympics were a perfect excuse to really update the Coliseum? And then we painted it and put new bathroom fixtures in? I remember. That’s UGA

Used to hate steg, but where it is now, a decently nice 10k arena. It's not what holding us back.

Now when it should have gone was when they were talking about moving downtown near the classic center in the 90s. Bball arena downtown would have been huge for a city that the downtown is basically apart of campus.

Stegeman is exponentially better than coleman but that doesn't seem to hold them back

I remember having high hopes with Dennis Felton. He looked like he was turning the corner with the SEC tournament win but several of his key recruits like Mike Mercer and Billy Humphrey couldn't stay out of trouble. I liked Felton as a coach too. He recruited guys like Sundiata Gaines that staid 4 years and were great Dawgs. I don't see guys who like Sampson or Marshall who are having success at mid-major conferences wanting to come to UGA.

If UGA offered Sampson more than Houston... he’d be on the next plane out. You kidding me? An opportunity to coach the flagship college in the State of Georgia... Atlanta in his back yard... The SEC... shiiiit... Sampson would come in a heartbeat. Marshall may be done or at least content on taking a break for a while.

The only thing I could see as a road bump for Sampson is his NCAA troubles at OU. There could be some writing preventing him from coaching at a P5 level.
