John Theus... what is the consensus on his time at UGA?

Nice writeup on the guy here: LINK /
I don't think I realized that he played in every UGA game while he was here. Nor was I aware of the shoulder problems that plagued him this season until much more recently. I feel like he's somewhat a casualty of the last 7+ years of Richt's recruiting that was laid out in another article, outlining the relative lack of quality OL drafted. As a 5 star, he was almost brought in with Eason level expectations to a role that just doesn't often have Freshmen contributing in a meaningful way. That coupled with the relative lack of depth on the OL and I feel like it just never fully clicked for him. Never seemed to develop into the recruiting ranking (not that it's his fault that he was given a 5 star rating), but I wonder what happens if/when he gets drafted and works with some of the best OL coaches out there.
Is the criticism unfair? Was he better than I'm giving him credit for in hindsight?

He took some time to come into his own but ended up being a reliable tackle his Junior/Senior season. He took some heat from fans for not being a stud early on and I've seen his work ethic criticized on here but don't know if that is substantiated. Overall, he was a very good asset for our team and helped us despite the lack of depth and going against some really good players.

Theus would have looked better if he had a better supporting cast on the offensive line.

I remember him playing awful at Mizzou his Freshman year and committing a lot of false starts that year as well.
However I don't remember really noticing him the last 2 years, which means he was probably doing a good job. Not one of our best lineman ever (Stinchcomb, Jean-Giles level) but he was good.

I admire his toughness. But I did expect him to be better based on his hype. However, he did come from Bolles in Jacksonville. Kids from there don't play the same type of hard-nosed football that you have to play in Georgia. So he had an uphill climb.

He had a good career. Fans expected too much from him, but that's not his fault.

Tunsil was a beast and looked dominate without a supporting cast....
Theus was good his last 2 years but never made it to elite status. He was moved to right tackle a few times and was almost benched on numerous occasions. He is a DGD, but never played out to the high expectations. He will fizzle away in the nfl unfortunately. Good thing he got his degree. Wish him the best though.

Tunsil is a completely different animal. There's only one guy like him every few seasons.
Theus can succeed in the NFL. Not at LT, but he's good enough to stick. There are four other positions.

Theus was an very good lineman (no he was not Tunsil). He would have certainly benefited from a red shirt year. I think the fact he manned a starting spot in the SEC for 4 years and played hurt says a lot about him. He will have a long career in the league imho.

This. Theus has been solid for us and with an equally good supporting cast we would have had a much better offense during Theus' tenure.

I remember it wasn't the rest of the year. Just one bad game on a bad ankle. Overall, he never should have been a 5 star. He seemed like he was close to his ceiling on his abilities from the start, but he gave us four solid years of starting in the sec, and that's not easy to do in the sec.

Theus seemed to get no better after his freshman year, IMO.
A good player, but never really dominant.

This. Never lived up to the ridiculous All-American type expectations that come with territory of being 5 star recruit, but that shouldn't obscure the fact that he was a solid four-year starter.

exactly. YOu don't start for 4 years as an OT in the SEC if you suck.
