This year isn’t any different numbers wise.

Injury, transfer portal at any time, suspension, dismissal, several current WR's who aren't any good; I don't know what Kirby's worried about but using a 2020 spot on Cager suggests there are concerns. Unless he already knew Holloman was in trouble when we took Cager, he's probably still a bit worried now. Since he or somebody thought it was worth the cost to improvise once already, they might think so again if those concerns are borne out.

Which is a frick of a lot easier when the guy delivering the ball to these inexperienced receivers will be an NFL first round pick next spring. Not only are they going to be catching balls from an NFL QB, but UGA's offense has rarely relied heavily on WR production. This situation sucks but it's going to be much easier to absorb than losing Nizialek was after 2017 (to put things in perspective).

All of those concerns exist every year for every position. Adding cager on our strengthens our roster. That was the Hartley connection, and a guy you shouldn’t pass up. Don’t read too much into it.

True, but you don't use a 4 year initial counter spot on a one year, mediocre career, grad transfer, unless there is a higher than normal risk of potential problems at that position for that year. I'm not reading too much, just noting that Kirby elected to burn a spot in the 2020 class, which means he was already concerned about WR before we lost Holloman.

Cager was an answer for the missing Wims role in the offense. I think the hope is that by 2020 either Landers or Bush could fill that high point/jump ball target role, but in 19 we just didn't have it.
If you're under the impression that 20 is a possible step back due to too much heavy offensive transition (Qb, both starting OTs, starting RB), you take the shot at completing the roster... And doing something special in 19...

Cager doesn't look like Wims to me. From his Miami highlights over 3 years I saw about two sort of "high point/jump ball" catches, about as many as you'd expect from any other WR's highlight videos. He also doesn't use his hands as well as Wims IMO (based on limited number of receptions to judge), tends to let the ball in closer to his body. That would be an odd strategy, trying to replace a guy who left in 2017 with a one year grad transfer who doesn't show the same skills on film.
I think they brought him in for depth and talent concerns and Cager was the best grad transfer option they could find. Probably a good move if you have some potential non-contributors and are a little lower on numbers than you'd like to be. Hopefully we'll avoid more attrition and that's all that will need to be done.

We had a spot open for the 2019 team and he picked the best available player to fill that spot. Kirby did it last year with the Notre Dame DL. It’s smart roster building. It’s an insurance policy. If the guy is a dud, it doesn’t matter because it’s not a 4 year player.

I agree, except for the last sentence. One thing to remember about the signing rules - you can only average 25 new signees per year. The more players you sign with only one year of eligibility (anything less than 4 really), the greater the likelihood of roster shortfalls in future years. Couple that with what looks like a trend toward more transfers and we'll start to see serious problems pop up. Teams will be playing shorthanded with no way to fix it other than walk-ons.
