It’s valid to say that he should consider the potential loss of millions vs playing in a college game. I still don’t see where the line is definitively drawn for a guy who was considered a 1st round pick early in the season. The risk is the same if he is playing in the Belk Bowl or the National Championship.

He has every right to choose to sit. I would never in a million years take that right away.
But it is easy to call a spade a spade.
When a defensive player ignores his responsibility and tries to make the big play, it is a loser mentality.
The defense has to play as a unit. Each brother for one another. Or it doesn't work. The team loses games when a player doesn't keep his part of the unit.
Baker has the right to sit.
He even has the privilege to tell Kirby that he wants to stand on the sidelines and cheer on the team in street clothes, evidently. He has earned that as well.
But how is this not big me, little team for the bowl game?

Sure the risk is the same but the reward isn’t, which is the difference. Deandre sitting out the Belk bowl doesn’t really hurt his team in the long run because the game doesn’t mean much. Has nothing to do with them achieving their goals. Deandre sitting out the national title game, does hurt his team in achieving its goals.
There are far too many people on this board who really can’t grasp that this sugar bowl game is a consolation. Anything outside of the CFP is for show. I’d imagine DB has the support of his teammates, so he should have ours as well.

Baker has turned selfish. Your excuses for his case make me sick. He's turned his back on the fans, his teammates and on his coaches. He is not a DGD.
IIRC Baker had a high 2nd rd. grade last year, he chose to come back for his Senior year to finish his College career instead of going to the NFL after his jr. season.
I for one support him and he's definitely earned the moniker DGD...
A quote from elsewhere and I agree...
quote:
As much as Baker would like to go play with his teammates once last time, he has to go ahead and start thinking about his NFL future...
Baker gave everything he had to the Georgia football program. In his four years in Athens, he made the team, program and school better. He’s everything a college football player should strive to be, and Georgia fans are better for having gotten to watch him play.
With the playoff system as it stands it renders all other bowls pretty much meaningless in the big picture. We're just gonna see this more and more. Tix for the Sugar Bowl on Stubhub start as low as $16.
It's becoming Playoffs or bust for the fans so how can you blame a guy who's gonna become a millionaire in 4 months for not risking his future... JMHO

I agree. Let’s stop complaining about it because it’s not going to change as long as the playoff system is in place.
Coaches already look at the extra practice as prep for next year, why not the game, too? That’s just the new reality of today’s game.
It’s playoff or bust, so why risk your financial future on an essentially meaningless game (a championship is off the table)?
I can’t say I would with millions on the line. Do I necessarily like it? As a fan, no. But when you look at it from a business standpoint, and that is what college football has become, it makes perfect sense. It just is what it is.

Tell that to the seniors.
Tell that to the coaches.
Tell that to the fans traveling for the game.
What matters is the standard. It matters a ton. It has been preached and imprinted on the men who take the field doing drills/reps ~35 weeks a year. Without the standard, those reps and weeks would be meaningless.
When the standard isn't important, you lose to lesser opponents. And when you lose to lesser opponents, you look like Tennessee to recruits.

I’m pretty sure they’re aware they aren’t in the playoff.
The players on the team likely don’t think Baker quit on them, why should we?

You are really melting over a guy who gave it all for 4 years and is the best CB in CFB. And now wants to make sure all that hard work can be cashed in. Get some perspective

DC, you don’t get it. Baker spit in meansonny’s face. This is about respect, it’s about honor.

All makes sense now. We are famous for spitting so why not Baker too

You people trying to throw out the entire career of one of the best defensive backs to ever play at UGA over his decision to not play in a bowl game that is, like it or not, meaningless, is asinine.
Baker is a DGD, and if you're losing you're mind and disowning him for this, you certainly are not one yourself.

Baker absolutely doing the right thing. He has done 100x for this program what playing in this game could ever do, especially if he gets injured and can’t go to the NFL.....
Kirby can now tell recruits how he took a 3* ranked 700th, to becoming the Thorpe Award winning, All-American, top 15 draft pick....and its all due to the coaching of Kirby who specializes with DBs.
Sucks not to have him against those big WRs, but respect him for making a decision for his future after giving so much to UGA over the past 4 years

I respect the fact that he is looking out for his future. We're talking generational life changing money for his family here. Is a meaningless exhibition game worth risking that? He also declined an invitation to play in the Senior Bowl; is he selfish for turning down that opportunity to represent UGA? Is he selfish for turning down the life changing money he could have already banked had he turned pro and been in the NFL this season?
He also consulted with the coaches and his teammates on whether or not he should play. They had zero issue with it; why should you?

A big part of this could possibly be avoided if the schools took out a big insurance policy based upon projected career payouts on the top players.
The NCAA has an insurance program for most college athletes. The NCAA covers the insurance premium and the player pays them back if/when they get signed by a pro team, or even if they don't get signed. Georgia AD has an office that works with the student athletes to assist them with this.
Any player can participate after their sophomore season. They can get policies up to a maximum of $5M. Top premium is about $20K/year.

Alabama Cowboy, You ever see this type of thing in Nam? Where some cowards would refuse to fight and would hide in the back once they got short and were close to being discharged?
Are you really comparing Vietnam to a bowl game? Did you even serve Jefferson?

5 million is not going to cover 1/10th of the money he could make.
Give me top 10 pick money and you can call me a coward, quitter, whatever the hell you want.

There were lots of irrelevant bowls long before the playoffs.
Hell, our last 3 Sugar Bowls could have been considered "irrelevant".Don't recall anyone sitting out
those games.
