It will depend on if she was driving on her personal time or as part of her work. Even if she had authority to use a university vehicle - it shouldn’t matter if she was on her own time unless there is evidence the vehicle wasn’t maintained.

Hard to prove negligence against UGA if she wasn’t driving them around as part of her duties.

This is why they have insurance. It will drag out a loooong time. Possible years if they choose court. Gonna be a mess. Likely other lawsuits as well.

Big difference of whose insurance (if UGA car or her personal).

Who knows whats real or rumor at this point. Not even sure if the deceased have been buried yet.

But this fellow clearly loved everything there was about the university and the opportunities it afforded him. Would be sickening to watch anyone try to bleed it and trash it in his name over a tragic but all too common accident.

If it was me, I would be ashamed of any family or aquaintance that took part in any kind of lawsuit over this. But, i am confident my people would never do such. Unless thees something out of left field sinister that we dont know about, which seems unlikely

Even if it was part of her duties, she, also a fatal victim, presumable and allegedly fricked up and got in a wreck, in what world does that make UGA responsible?

Oh yeah, Clown World.

But we live in clown world. So Clown World Justice is what we will see.

It was a UGA employee! In a UGA car! It's it's it's it's..... UGA's fault!

Of course it doesn't make sense. All it takes is 12 uneducated shite-for-brains jurors to think "UGA didn't really do anything wrong, but this grieving family deserves something right, they deserve something" to clean house.

Not sure what life insurance UGA is doing on players but can somewhat understand if in fact she was a uga employee and part of that responsibility was to get them home safely (which I bet was part of their job).

Chandler LeCroy's funeral was today in Toccoa. It was streamed by the First Baptist Church of Toccoa. The UGA team chaplain took part in the service along with her ministers. The Senior Pastor referenced the team and Coach Smart so I assume they were in attendance. From everything I heard, she seemed like a wonderful person.

Another sad but necessary read: LINK

It takes a lot of people you don’t really ever think about to make this thing run the way it does

Terrible situation got worse. It's hard to understand how she ran off the road in that spot. It is a curve but that's not really a tight road. It was 2 lane back when I was in school and it's 4 lanes now. I'm sure the attorneys will try to argue that she was undertaking her job responsibility by giving them a ride. I would expect for PR reasons the University will try to settle out of court. Either way a very complex legal situation.

Take off your pretend lawyer hat.

When an airplane crashes, do all the victims' families get to sue the airline into bankruptcy?

Airline employee flying the plane. Airline owns the plane.

If they're going to sue anyone, they attorneys will go after whoever has the deepest pockets. That'll be UGA. The University's insurance company will then determine if this accident is covered under their policy. If it is, they'll offer the family whatever the policy's bodily injury limit is. It's up to the family to take it or ask for more. If they ask for more, UGA will give them the rest or it'll go to trail and then it's up to a jury to decide if the University is liable and how much money the family gets.

Whether UGA is liable depends on what role she was assuming. I'd guess both staffers were there as DDs and that someone with the University had asked/instructed them to do so. Also, is it part of their duties to drive players around? If the attorneys try hard enough, they'll be able to show the University, through the actions of their employees, was negligent. They staffers were employees who worked with the players. It's not going to be that hard to find some sort of connection and prove negligence.

My guess is UGA will settle out of court by throwing as much money as they can at this to make it go away. No one wants this to turn ugly. A jury trial would be a PR nightmare.

Sounds now like the ambulance chasers aren’t getting cooperation from the family.

quote:

ATHENS — Devin Willock’s father remains with family in Gainesville (Ga.) and says he knows nothing of lawyers or press conferences.

Dave Willock, the father of the Georgia football player who died in a car accident early Sunday, said he, too, read reports of a press conference being planned for Thursday afternoon by Big Injury Lawyers at the Athens-Clarke County Courthouse. He said he doesn’t plan to be there, and he has no plans at this time to sue the University of Georgia.

quote:

“I have no knowledge of a press conference; I heard about it on the news,” Dave Willock said in a telephone interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Thursday morning. “I heard it on the news and I’m like, ‘What? Who said that?’ I don’t know anything about it.”

quote:

Asked if he planned to attend the press conference, even out of curiosity, Dave Willock said emphatically, “No!” “I’m here; my son passed away; I’m emotional, dealing with hurt,” Dave Willock said. “I don’t know about that. I haven’t spoken to anyone yet.”

quote:

Dave Willock said he is focusing only on his son. He said he does not plan any legal action, at least not at this time. “No, Georgia is working with us,” the father said. “We have no reason to do that because they are compensating us 100%.” It was unclear exactly what Willock meant by that statement.

Article said the lawyer group pushed back the press conference (that was supposed to be on the steps of the ACC courthouse, lol) from 2:00 to 3:00, but I haven’t seen anywhere where it’s actually happened.

To be fair, haven’t heard a peep from Willock’s mom, so I guess it’s possible she’s trying to pursue action and they’re pushing a presser back until they have dad on board too but he’s not playing ball.

ETA:

looks like they did hold the “press conference” with no family present and no actual legal action announced. These guys sound like exactly what you picture them as.

quote:

Managing partner Roy T. Willey IV spoke outside the Athens-Clarke County Courthouse at a podium with a "Go Big Injury Lawyers,” sign that was affixed to it.

quote:

“Devin’s parents are understandably grieving having seen his body for the first time yesterday and having received updates today on the investigation,” Willey said.

A press release Wednesday said that Willey and members of the legal team would be discussing the details of the accident investigation and the legal actions, but no legal actions were detailed.

Willey walked away from reporters after speaking for more than five minutes and declined to answer questions when asked.

Again, sounds like the lawyers and family aren’t all singing from the same hymnal right now.

It seemed like the lawyer was using as a chance to get himself on TV and have his advertisement there. frick him for going through with that and the family having to answer all that stuff. Heartbreaking reading Willock’s dad’s responses in particular.

Willock’s mom also isn’t planning litigation.

quote:

ATHENS, Ga. — The mother of Devin Willock, the University of Georgia football player killed in a car crash early Sunday morning, said Thursday she has no plans for legal action at this point. The mother, Sharlene Willock, told 11Alive's Joe Ripley that she had retained an attorney but was not involved in any pending or planned litigation over her son's death.

quote:

The attorney, Roy Willey, held a press conference shortly before 3 p.m. but no family members were in attendance and nothing regarding litigation was announced.

When the press conference concluded, 11Alive's Joe Ripley tried ask more questions but the attorney walked away.

Willey read a statement from the family, which Sharlene Willock confirmed they provided.
